School post

If you could go to school for anything other than what you did, what would you do?

Let's assume money is no object.

If I could go back to my 18 year old self, I wish I had gone for a Psy D. or PhD in Neuropsych.  I am very interested in how trauma affects the brain.  I also liked working with children with brain injuries.  At the time, I didn't think I wanted to be in school that long and didn't think I could handle the science classes.

Re: School post

  • I would have gone for my teaching degree. I love my psyc degree and I love my job now as an aide, but I'd love even more to have my own classroom. I love to teach, and I don't get to actually "teach" now. It's mostly drill/practice and going over what was already taught.

  • I would have either done the same thing, or I wouldn't have gone to school the way I did an would have focused instead on getting experience event planning.

  • I honestly don't know what I would do, but right now I'm leaning towards getting a master's in biomed engineering.  Now that I think about it more, I think I would have gone for a medical degree.

  • Ugh. I don't know. There are so many things I want to do.

I'd love to receive a law degree, or further my education in Forensic Psychology...or a history degree - Civil War to present day American history to be more specific.

  • I switched degrees twice (Spanish w/ Geology minor > Tourism and Event Management w/ Spanish minor > Creative Writing w/ Span and TEM minors, lol) so I'm pretty happy where I ended up, even if it is a fairly useless degree with two fairly useless minors tacked on.

But to make things even more useless, I would love to go back and get my MFA in either poetry or fiction.  That would make me very happy.

  • advertising.  I almost did, and now I wish I would have.  Would have been cheaper (maybe an MBA at the most and certainly not at a $35K a year grad school) and I would have the potential to make so much more money.

  • Marine Biology.

Which is odd since I hate the water, but marine animals fasinate me.

  • I would have done what I did originally (Speech Communication). But I think I would have liked to do internships... I couldnt afford to do that because I paid for my education and had to work all through college.

  • I really am happy with my chosen career path, but I would study journalism (instead of psychology) so I can be a proper journalist and not feel like I'm just a fraud who lucked into this. Also, I would take shorthand classes cause I am horrible at interviewing people cause I scribble their responses and can't read my own writing.

Or maybe english/creative writing, and take a stab at that Great American Novel.

  • I would have stayed on the path I was one, but started with pre-law and followed through to law school.

Either that, or I would have stuck with my initial Biology plan and gone on to veterinary medicine.

  • Something more lucrative. Maybe nursing.
  • I'm not sure I'd change it, but if I did I would have gotten a pharmacology/toxicology PhD or MD/PhD in biochem. I didn't know pharm/tox existed when I was applying to grad schools, and I feel like I might have an easier time getting an industry position with that background. I would have been in school for longer with an MD/PhD, but only 1-2 years longer (they really zip you through the PhD in MD/PhD programs, it's kind of a joke to regular PhD students) and even though I don't really want to be a doctor, the information would have been really interesting. Plus it's a free MD, how can you pass that up?
  • I'm pretty happy with my career path - I make a pretty good salary for having a Bachelor's and NOT needing a Master's. Which means my school loans aren't that bad. With the volatile career that Michael has it's really good that I have the type of stability that I have. And accounting isn't going away anytime soon...

If my salary wasn't as important to us.... I would have gone with graphic design/photography or some sort of event planning. I'm contemplating dabbling in it at some point. I'd also love to be a music teacher, but I don't think I could handle the menusha of school districts/politics, etc.

  • Criminal Justice. I wouldn't want to be on patrol, but maybe something on the investigative level or forensics. That would be so interesting.
