Re: open house- living room

  • Tried to get it from all angles. We have coved ceilings in our living and dining rooms. We just ordered  a new sectional couch too. I will post pictures when it comes in, in 3 weeks.

  • I'm sad to say I don't have any really updated photos, these are from when we first moved in...we have gotten a new couch since then, and a new coffee table. I'll have to try to take new photos at some point.

    Here's our upstairs living room:

And here's the man cave/finished basement living room

We also have the sunroom, which is like another living room from about April thru October. We redid it in July 2010.

  • As an aside, this is the new couch in our upstairs living room - it is a much deeper/richer chocolate brown in person.

    image

And this is the new coffee table, also a richer/deeper brown in person, and the proportions look off in this photo from the store...oh well, close enough.

  • Before we moved in:

    image

This is right after we moved in but gives you a good idea of the space with the couches in...you can't really tell but the TV is sitting on old speakers:

We eventually got a rug, book case, and real TV stand:

We put up floating shelves last year:

  • These pictures were all (quite obviously) taken before Christmas.

This is the front room (formal living/dining room eventually...we're not sure which way we want to go w/ it) that is just off the entry. 1st pic is a view from the hallway, 2nd is a view from the hallway during construction, the last 2 pictures are views from the front door.

    image

    image

    image

    image

And this is our family room. First is a view from the kitchen/eat in. 2nd is a view from in front of the tv. 3rd is the photo wall. 4th is from during construction looking towards the family room (& morning room) from the eat in. 5th was taken during construction standing where the TV is, just a different angle (the open door is the laundry room that leads to the garage)

This last picture is the hallway connecting the family & front rooms.

Wow! I love all of these! I'm especially jealous of all your hardwood floors.

Our living area is very open concept. It's great 80% of the time. The other 20% I'd rather the kitchen be more closed off because it can get noisy.

View from the dining room. The bright area on the left is the entryway and front door. The first door in the hall is our guest bedroom. The On the right is the door and window to the deck and backyard. It's actually a pretty large room. We have the couches closer to the TV and fireplace than we used to, but I like it.

    image

View from the kitchen. The doorway you can see on the left is our second bathroom. I need to get nicer window coverings, but those work for now. The right side is a regular door, so whatever we get has to slide over.

    image

View from the entryway. The dining room is in the back and kitchen to the right.

    image

Closer view. I love our TV stand.

    image

The fireplace and mantle. I also love having a fireplace and mantle.

  • As an introduction to the paint choices: we have not painted a single room because the previous owners had painted the whole house and we were looking for bright.  The living room is a pretty bold yellow; I would probably tone it down a little but for now we're leaving it.

Here is the fireplace/mantel from Christmas; this is on the front of the house and the two front doors are on either side of the fireplace.  Yes, there are portraits of dogs wearing uniforms that hang out year round.  I know, we have "interesting" taste in art.

    image

This is the front door so you can see the woodwork which runs throughout the house on all doors, window frames and entrances to other rooms (to the right of the above view, on the left if looking at the outside photos from yesterday):

    image

    Closeup of handle:

    image

This is the wall to the right if you're looking at the front door from inside.  The previous owners left yellow curtains, too, but I replaced them with these more sheer burgundy curtains.  The color scheme will make more sense when you see the quilt later:

    image

    Patrick's play area:

    image

If you turn 180 degrees from the above view, this is what you see:

    image

We've started a photo gallery that will go up the stairs. That's our wedding invite on the lower right. You can also see the quilt with the colors that hopefully will tie all these brights together.  The chair on the left is covered in brown, but tere's a deep red pet cover because Simon lives there.  Also, Harry is in the lower right corner!

I plan to build some shelves and paint them dark brown to match the fireplace mantel to put on the wall to the right of the window (not shown; about 5 feet of wall space but there's another upright radiator there that makes furniture placement tricky).

  • Thanks, Jaime!!

I do love our living room (though sometimes I think it's cluttered; Jaime assures me it's not!)

Ignore the builder beige paint (you'll see the theme througout our condo - we haven't painted a single room since this was supposed to be a temporary home). Thank goodness for colorful accessories!

Becky - I love all the details! The woodwork, the front door. I totally wanted to buy an older home for some character, but Matt was totally against it. If we ever move again, I'm insisting!

  • We just got all of our furniture this weekend and will be slowly working on decorations. The first picture is the before. We ripped out the carpet, instaled bamboo floors and painted the walls. Oh yeah, and we have to put the molding around the windows. I'm really in love with antiquey pieces right now. The last picture is of a camera which belonged to H's father, circa 196?. We have another one also, just haven't decided where it will go.

  • My living room is part of the original house, built in 1906. All the woodwork in the living room is original, and I love it!

Once the divorce is final and I know what kind of money I need to pay Keith for his portion of the equity, I'll be getting a new couch and chair and getting rid of the current couch and loveseat. I want a fresh start...and something more girly! Smile I also need window coverings, but I can't find anything i like that won't make the room seem smaller than it already is.

The "window" you see behind the loveseat is actually the original front door. It's screwed shut and I have no intentions of removing it. I love the character it adds.

  • Our living room is right when you walk in the front door. No entry way just wow you are in the living room. I love the ceilings and the hardwood floors. I hate how tiny it is and that the heat comes out of a giant floor vent that takes up a huge portion of the floor. I love that we have a fire place but am not a fan of how much room a kiva style one takes up.

Most Santa Fe houses are like this though, lots of charm but not very practical!

  • Here is our formal LR.  The couches are really a sectional we used to have in our FR and the tables used to be in our FR as well.  They will be moving all to the basement once we finish this room.  We want to buy a leather sofa and chaise lounge for this room, but won't do it until we put in hardwood flooring.  Both our Formal LR and DR will be hardwood one day in 4" Brazilian Cherry that Alexi has his heart set on.  I've only hung two pics in this room as I'm not sure about final colors and decor.  Any suggestions on color for this room or our formal DR are welcome!  We can't decide between a deep red or a blue for our our DR and whatever we chose there will lead to our decision on the LR paint color.

    View from front entryway-

    image

View from Formal DR. I made the sheer curtains.  I haven't made a swag or valance yet, because we can't decide on a color for this room.

    image

View from solid wall: (the boxes to the right are future bookshelves from IKEA for our FR)

    image

A close-up of a shadow box I did that is just to the left of the bay window made from our two wedding invitations (Spanish & English), my blusher veil, and some silver pieces and flowers from my bouquet.

    image

And this is our Family Room with new paint (Behr premium ultra in Macchiatto) on one wall and new TV (Excuse M's mess)  We bought two small shelving units to go on either side of the FP from IKEA (Besta line in black-brown with glass doors that have wood surrounds) to hold our TV boxes, so the entertainment center in there is going away to the basement.  We still have to pick out a mantle and change the molding around the FP tiles to be a bit more our style.  I don't think we're going to get a whole FP surround- just do the mantle and the molding separately.

    image

Here are some pics just after we moved in with the old couches and tables-

  • I missed yesterday so I'll post for both days.

Exterior - we haven't done much to it

    image

We have two livingrooms.  Here's the main one we use to watch TV.  Eventually we will get a nice table or at least paint these black.  There's a flat screen and directly across from the couch.  Not sure if I have a picture of that side.

    image

Here's livingroom #2 where we watch movies on the projector.  We bought the enourmous couches specifically for entertaining.  We have a ton to do still.  Paint, decorate, get a mantel, build out a wall around the fireplace so we can add a hidden screen for the projector, etc.

  • Claire- I am jealous of your sunroom!
  • Claire I love your sunroom furniture!

Here are some pictures of our sunroom...I have plans to recover the current cushions and to make pillows. I also need more window treatments. The first pic is during construction...the rest are pretty current....the only difference is the boxes of baking indredients were only there before Christmas. :)  The 1st 2 pictures are taken from the eat in area. All of the blankets on the chair are Roxy's...even though it's slightly colder in there she loves to lay in that chair and bark at the neighbors when they're out. I have plans to spray paint the drawers/baskets in the 3rd pic to match the furniture....which we spray painted, we bought it white.

  • This is the update to the room, we added a book case and organization boxes to hold all of DHs piano music.

Once Norah is done with the Jumper the chair will move back across the room and we will have a little more room!  DH bought the piano when he first bought the condo before he had any other furniture. The picture over the piano was a gift from some of DHs coworkers when he left Iraq.

I am so excited about the baskets, it is nice to have all those shelves organized!
