Cost of living...

I'm full of random questions lately.

So I've been lurking on other boards for some odd reason lately, and noticed that on MM they talk a lot about HCOL vs LCOL.

What is RI? I feel like we're in the middle...MCOL? haha

Re: Cost of living...

  • I think we are in the middle. I don't consider us high, simply because I have a friend that lives on Long Island who bought a house last year. The house is smaller than ours and they paid more than double what we paid. And their taxes are nearly triple ours. On the flip side, my ex bought a house in TX that is more than double the size of ours and he paid over $100k less for it. His property taxes are higher, but he also has no state income tax, so that's a wash.

So yeah, I personally would say we are MCOL. ;)

I lurk on MM a lot, too. I'd probably say we're somewhere between MCOL and HCOL. There are definitely more expensive places (in Boston and anywhere near NYC), but on there they classify those places as very high COL. I think New England in general tends towards HCOL.

  • MM depresses me. lol

But I would think we were mid-COL as well.

  • Coming from the midwest, I say MCOL.  There's definitely a misconception out that way that every place up east is HCOL, but not the case at all.  We live happily in a nice part of town for not much money.

  • Yeah, I'd say the higher end of MCOL.
