Make Up Faves (for my mom)

My mom recently had her makeup bag stolen out of her purse (while she was feeding people at a soup kitchen if you can believe it).  She's not a big makeup person, so everything she had was in there.

I'm going to buy her some new stuff as a thank you for coming and helping after my surgery.  What should I get her?  She'll need:

Concealer (anyone use anything age defying?):

Foundation:

Eye Liner (brown):

Eye Shadow (browns and greens):

Mascara (must come in brown):

Lip Gloss (plus if it tastes good):

For colors, she's olivey with brown hair she highlights red and green eyes.  She already got herself a "Pink Chocolate" Clinique set with some colors in it (lipstick, eye shadow, blush), so we're working on everything else.

Re: Make Up Faves (for my mom)

  • I love Makeup Forever HD Foundation. I buy the liquid, but it also comes in a powder.

I love Lorac eyeshadows. The Color Me Couture palette is pretty (greens and browns). I have the Red Carpet Reveal palette (mostly browns) which I really like as well.

I'm a Lash Stiletto girl...I'm pretty sure they have it in brown.

If you're looking for more blush, I love NARS. You'd probably have to test the colors in person though to see what would be best for her. I use Orgasm and Angelika but I'm super pale, as you know!

  • I also meant to say that was pretty lame of whoever took her stuff! Who would have thought....at a soup kitchen of all places!
  • I love the mineral make-up by Bare Escentuals. They have a great eye shadow kit called 'the browns' you get three different brown shadows and a brush. I use these for shadow and liner. I love the foundation and lip gloss too. The Buxom makes your lips appear fuller. I also always suggest urban decay potion primer for shadows.

I tried to love the make-up forever foundation, but I found it cakey :(

Hmm that's funny. I've been a fan ever since my sister used it on me for my wedding makeup trial. I've never found it cakey, but I apply it with my fingertips...maybe that makes a difference?

I also used it for my wedding and thereafter. Maybe I should try to apply with my fingers instead if a sponge? I have two full bottles at home that I would like to not waste. Maybe I just find it cakey because I'm used to the powder foundation?
  • K-hart, It may just be that you're not used to the texture of liquid foundation? Either way, it's worth a try applying with your fingers!
  • I love mineral foundation as well. I use Bare Minerals which is nice since it can be bought at any Sephora or Ulta. I use it for foundation, warmth (gives a nice sunkissed glow but is not bronzer) and the mineral veil which basically hides all imperfections. I also turned my mom on to it; she's in her mid-50's and loves it.

Everything else I just buy what I like when I see it; I've got eyeshadows, eyeliners and lipsticks all from Almay, CoverGirl, L'Oreal, etc...

  • I don't wear much makeup, but I can tell you that I think Clinique Quickliner for eyes is definitely the best liner I've ever used.  I wear the black/brown daily.  Easy to apply and doesn't tend to wear off much.

Also, I've tried tons of department store mascaras, but I always go back to the grocery store for Almay's Thickening mascara.  I believe it comes in brown...I wear the black/brown.

  • I ditto Jillian's suggestion for MAC.  But I'm a total MAC snob and pretty much love all their stuff.  I think part of it is the customer service aspect because I like when I go into the store looking for a new eye shadow or to update my foundation, they always take the time to show me how to apply it so I can do it myself at home with no problems. Or if I ask for a complete look, they will show me how to do it from start to finish if I ask them to. I always end up buying more than what I need but I definitely feel much more confident in my purchases.

They have quite a few options for foundations, I believe.  I use the studio fix ( I think that's the name) and really like it.  It's not heavy and covers wells.  Their finishing powders are really nice, too. They don't cake up. I also really like their concealers... again, they're not heavy and really do the job... and they don't crease.

You can definitely skip on the eyeliners, mascaras and blushes.  You can usually find a good comparison at the drugstore.  But, my favorite eyeliners and mascaras are Mary Kay.  They're reasonably price ($10 for the eyeliner and $10-15 for the mascara) and wear well.

Also, I think buying a couple nice brushes would be nice, ones for applying foundation, blush/bronzer and eyeshadow.  I never really thought much about the type of brushes before learning how to do make up but it makes a world of a difference.

Or try using a foundation brush.  I used to have a hard time finding a foundation that didn't feel heavy.  I find that it's much easier to control how much you're putting on and you end up using less product because the brush distributes it much more evenly.
