parking near the WH

We are going to the WH easter egg roll on Mon, the 25th. We have to be in line at 1pm. We live out in Loudoun (so about 45mins from metro). Should we metro or drive? Is there any chance at finding parking w/n walking distance? I'm willing to pay! We will have 2 kids in a double stroller. I'm thinking we can drive in early, say get to DC around 11-ish and take our time. Any chance we'll find parking? Metroing brings all kinds of issues w/ it but if we have to, that's what we'll do.

TIA, DC experts!

Re: parking near the WH

  • If you have time and the weather is nice, I would just drive downtown and look for parking garages.  A lot of them fill up, but I want to say the one under the Reagan building usually has spots even midday.  Then you can just stroll from there.  It'd be about $16 - $20 to park in a garage depending on time of day and how long you stay.
Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • I agree with Artslvr.  I don't think you will have to walk any further from a garage than you would from the Metro.

The only caveat - is I would make sure that nothing is going on at the World Bank or IMF that day because it can shut down streets near the White House and make parking even more difficult.

  • What day of the week is the Easter Egg Roll?

    Saturday? Sunday?

  • There is a public parking garage on New York Ave, basically across from the Corcoran that is probably about as close as you can get to the White house. (The Corcoran is just across 17th from the White House) It's under the American Institute of Architects building. I've parked there many, many times. Of course, on the day of the WH Easter Egg Roll it might fill up, but it's not really well known, so it's worth checking out.

Here's the address: 1735 New York NW

Getting there is super, duper easy, but let me know if you need help with directions.

actually, we've closed this to the public now (bc we have a tenant who takes up half of the garage). There are two lots on 18th Street between F and G, but they tend to fill up earlier (early bird parking specials). There are two or three lots on Pennsylvania Avenue between 18th and 17th, but they may also be full - esp that day. All of these charge $15-20/day.

Honestly, I think Metro is your best bet bc of the time of day you want to come in -- all these garages cater to commuters and tend to fill up by 9am or so. Get off at Farragut West, 17th Street exit, and walk down 17th to White House. Will take about 15 mins to walk, once off Metro.

You could park at Union Station (which doesn't fill up, obv) and take a cab or Metro (to Farragut North) from there.....
