Poll: Ideal house size

I was just reading responses to this poll on another board and was curious to see what the responses for the area we are in would be.

Re: Poll: Ideal house size

  • I'm not in the area but I want to play anyway.  We have about 2400 sf which is probably more than we need but it's a good size for us and for when we have parties.  I do sort of wish that the extra formal living room (the red room in my bio) were a fourth bedroom instead though so then I could maybe have a craft room Smile

    ETA: we have 3BR/2.5BA.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • We have about 1600 sq ft.  Ideally larger (making another bedroom) would be ideal.
  • Ours is about 2700 sq ft, just barely under, 4 bedroom 3 1/2 bath. It works perfectly for us and its nice when we have guests because the guest room is on the opposite side of the house from the other three rooms. Plus the guest room has its own bathroom.

  • Our townhome is about 1150 sq. ft. so I am thinking 1600 sq. ft. would be awesome.
  • We have just over 1600 SF and it is absolutely our ideal!

  • About 2000 sq ft would be great (the house I grew up in)  we have 1308 now
  • b/t 2k and 2500 sf ... big enough for us to host our HUGE families but not so huge that we can't take care of it.

  • I'm a sf idiot, but I'll go with a 3 br, 2 ba home with a dining area, living room, daylight basement and 2-car garage. With lots of closet space. :)
  • We have 2000sqft. 3 bd 2.5 bath..It is perfect for us! I do wish we had a little bigger yard though. But we have many parks near by

  • We live in a 2/1, 1050 sq. ft. For the most part, it's fine for our current needs (though it is way too small/not properly furnished for when we have a lot of people over for a party or a meal.)

In an ideal world, we'd have a separate laundry room, a two-car instead of one-car garage, another full bath, and a third bedroom so that we could separate the office/where we keep DH's animals from the guest bedroom. Once we have kids, I'd like them to have their own rooms and a separate bathroom.

I try to balance all this "want" with the knowledge that the more space you have, the more space you have to clean, heat and cool, and the more stuff you tend to accumulate.

  • Probably around 2,500 sq ft.

  • We have about 1150 right now & it is way too small (mainly lack of closet space). I would like a 4th bedroom for toys and a 2nd bathroom. Also laundry room to be in the house instead of in the detached garage. That sucks in the rain.
  • Ideal for us is 3BD, 2 BA. This way we could have a guest room. We need 2 BD because of DH's medical bed that is large but I cannot sleep in with him. It would be nice to have 2 BA because he needs to have a bench to transfer onto to take a shower. It can be annoying for guests and even for me to maneuver around it and/or take it out. Square footage would be as much as possible for him to maneuver around all the rooms.
  • We have a 3400 sq ft house and I feel like its perfect for us. We have a room for each kid (when we have #2), we have a guest bedroom and an office. We don't need anything bigger and not sure if I'd want anything bigger since maintenance and monthly bills (water, gas, elect) will be higher. Of course we can do with a smaller home but we feel really comfortable in our house. And we have space from each other if we want space. :)

  • Our house now is a little over 1900 sq ft.  I would really like a 5 bedroom(instead of a 3)  Mainly because I would like and office and a guestroom or another room if we want one more child.
  • We're in a 1,400 sq. ft 3/2 and the only thing I want for is a formal dining room, which would add what? We already have a good dining space, so I'll say 1,500.

  • Our house is about 1,700 sq feet. Our last apartment was 720. I spend so much extra time cleaning and yet we only use about 1200 square feet of this house on a regular basis! I sometimes really miss that apartment. It was so quick to clean!

I feel like our house is a little large for us right now, but I know I'll feel different when we have kids. I think the largest I'd want is 2500 square feet, but around 2000 would be best (again when we have kids).

I also think it depends a lot on the layout. I don't think we have the worse layout ever, but there are some things I'd like different.

  • Ideally I'd like 5 br 4 ba, and in the 2400-2800 sq foot range.  Although it would be a *** to clean that much I'd love more rooms!

We currently have 3br 2 ba and it's just about 1600 sq ft, it's adequate for us but we don't have a lot of extra space.

  • some of you have huge homes! Ours is 1150, 3bed/2ba, lots of closets, laundry inside and low maintenance yard (not a big yard either). I'm glad we didn't get a two-story now, only because heating/cooling costs but I think when we upgrade it would be between 1500-2700. I don't want too much house; and I admire my MIL since she raise 4 boys in a 3 bed/1ba house that was only 1000 sq feet.

  • Our house is just under 2000sq ft. 3br/2.5 bath. We've only lived here a month but so far I think the space is perfect for us. Our master is huge so when we do have kids we can move the office into our room and still feel like we have a bedroom and an office.

  • Our condo that we sold (and on Friday officially no longer own) was 1200 sq ft and just a little small for us (though it was only a 2bd 2 ba)...

The house we are in now is 2124 sq ft.  4 bd 3ba

It is too much house for us.  We have an entire empty bedroom that we just closed up and blocked the vent to.  We made the 3rd room into an office and craft room and it is honestly too big for it (its a large room).  Our master swallows up the cal king bed.  The master closet is barely filled, the linen closet (which is almost a walk-in) is empty...all the bedrooms have walkin closets and all but the master are completely empty.

Our lowest level (tri-story sorta, the first floor is a split level) aka the family room we turned into a workout room and it is WAY too big for that.  The main living area is the only area that fits us...except our dining nook is completely empty.

So we are discovering that we have TOO much space now.  So we are thinking 1600 sq ft might be perfect when we buy our next home.  Until then we will just not buy any more furniture and not add to anything and keep doors closed to closets and empty rooms to ensure we do not accumulate more crap.  We are also not pack rats...we are purgers...so that helps, we require purpose for everything in our home.

  • I'm in the Sac area and have two kids so my response comes from that. I would love an 1800-2000 sq ft house. Nothing bigger. Anything bigger and the kids can hide and I don't want them to be able to hide especially as they get older. Right now we are in a 1300 sq ft house and it's totally doable, but it would be nice to have a 4th bedroom for an office/den/playroom so that our computer and the kids toys don't all have to be in the living area of our house. Ultimately we'd love to have a 4 bed, 2 bath and 3 car garage. Unfortunately we've lost over 150k on our house and will be stuck here forever.
