Mat. Leave & Daycare question

I realize that everyone is different but how long did you take for maternity leave after LO was born and was it too long/ too short/ just right? I can only collect TDI 6 weeks(8 if c-section) and have been told by several people that it won't be long enough- which I figured but not sure how to know how long will be long enough until the time comes, which isn't an option. If it matters, once I do go back to work LO will only be away from either DH or I for about 15hrs a week.

Which leads me to my next question when I do decide to go back....

Any daycare recs for Woonsocket/ Lincoln area? We would only need someone PT maybe 2 days a week. Thanks!

Re: Mat. Leave & Daycare question

  • IMHO it's never long enough!  I took the full FMLA 13 weeks (12 weeks of Federal + 1 week in RI).  It will never be the "right time" for you to go back, but you'll find a new normal.  As for recs, we love Storks Nest on the Smithfield/Lincoln line.  If you go for a tour, tell them I sent you! :)

This, this, this. I was out for just over 12 weeks and I so wasn't ready. But, it is what it is. But I do know that if I had gone back at 6 weeks, I would have lost it. DS and I were just getting into a good grove at that point and it would have broken my heart if I had to give that up.

  • I would agree to the 12 weeks if you can take it but like everyone has said, it's always hard and never the right time! Plus it seems like you won't have to put your little one in daycare too much so that is always nice/piece of mind! My SIL sent our nephew to the Stork's Nest in EG and they loved it so I agree with Becky.
  • I agree that it is never enough time!  I got 11 weeks, and it was a good time for us to transition DS to daycare.  He was still so young that he didn't go through any seperation anxiety.

No recommendations on a location, as I am in Npt.

  • I also agree with everyone else.  I went back to work part time when he was 10 weeks old.  The way my schedule works now I am with him most mornings and then DH is with him at night while I am at work.  I am going back to work full time in May and we found a great home daycare that my mom knows the woman who runs it but I think it will still be tough after spending so much time with him.  Good luck!!

  • I went back to work part-time and working from home around 8 weeks.  I actually really enjoyed it, but I think that's because my work was so flexible.  I liked getting the adult/professional interactions back into my life, and I didn't have to sacrifice much time with DD.  We had a nanny come to the house so I could work, and I was still able to nurse on demand.  She mostly just slept when the nanny was there, so I didn't feel too guilty.  I'm sure it would have been more difficult if I had had to return to a regular office setting, but I wanted to put it out there that although it was difficult, it was also really nice to regain some parts of my own life that I had enjoyed pre-DD.
  • I took 12 weeks and it wasn't long enough, so I took in another baby for some extra cash and now I stay home!

I liked Johnston Child Care Center in Johnston and Children's Workshop in Smithfield.

  • I took 13 weeks out for my 1st pregnancy, and 13 weeks with this one.  6 weeks was paid, 7 was not.  We knew it was coming, so we just tucked away enough money for 7 weeks to get by, and pay bills so that I could afford to stay out the max allowable time.  You never feel ready to go back, but I felt like I needed some part of me back that wasn't just DS1's mommy.  It would have been nice to go back to work 3 days a week, instead of 4, but I can't do that. You will adjust to whatever you need to do. It's always hard to leave your baby that 1st week back to work, but its good for you to get away, and its also good for the baby to be with other people besides just mom and dad.  Good luck and whatever you decide, will be whats right for you.
  • Thank You- I figured that no matter what amount of time you take it is never enough but somehow we all make it work. Thanks for the daycare recs as well!
