Astoria vs. LIC

Hey ladies, I have been lurking for awhile, and posted a few times because DH and I are moving to Queens in late June.  I know awhile back someone was trying to start a thread for people moving to NYC, but I haven't seen it go anywhere, so I wanted to post again with a couple questions if that is ok?  I am hoping to hang around this board more now that we are moving!

So we are contemplating living in Astoria, or LIC, because those were some of the recommendations that we got that might fit our needs.  We are looking for a 2 BR place that will accommodate our large dog, be walking distance to a subway station (we are not bringing our cars), and hopefully be close to a grocery store, vet, and other shopping.  We are planning on starting a family, so I want to stay in a good family friendly area. We are looking to spend about $2200/month, but could spend more depending on what my job situation turns out to be. (I don't have one lined up yet).

What would you pick?  Astoria? Long Island City?  Something totally different?  And bonus points if you actually know of a place that might be coming available in late June - early July! :)

Thanks so much!

Lots of love and continual explosions of babydust to my BG Besties! XOXOXOXO

Re: Astoria vs. LIC

  • I think you could totally find a very nice place in Astoria for that budget. My friend just moved into a really cute 1 BR there and I think they are paying $1700.  It is brand new and only a 1 flight walk up.   GL!
  • I would choose Astoria as to me it has more sense of community. A friend of mine got a brand new 1BR apt for $1,800 there. Plus the restaurants, subway access etc. make it a preferred spot.

LIC is up and coming but most parts still resemble/contain industrial shops. I think LIC needs about 5 more years to become the next downtown Brooklyn.

  • Why Queens? Have you thought about Brooklyn?

Both areas will have what you are looking for (based on your OP). LIC is more conveniently located IMO, but PP is right. Astoria feels more like a community. LIC has a lot of office buildings and high rises. In Astoria, you're more likely to be in a 3rd floor walk-up.

I agree with everything that muddled said. You should listen to her. -ESDReturns
  • Thank you all so much! :)  I think we were leaning towards Queens because it is closest to where my DH will be working, and it seemed like we could get a bit more for our money than Brooklyn. BUT, if there are reasonable options in Brooklyn, we would totally consider it.

Astoria was our first choice, but I had been seeing a lot listed in LIC that seemed nice and in our range. So thank you for the tip about it being a bit industrial still! :) We will keep looking. :)

And thank you also for the link to the moving post.

I am sure that once we get more finalized I will have a lot more questions. Thanks so much for all of your help so far. :)

  • If you don't mind me asking, what area will your H be working in? Or, what subway lines do you want to be on?

In addition to Astoria, check out the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area. Also, South (Park) Slope also has some great deals. Both are close to great parks (for long dog walks) and have lots of good restos and shopping.

Thanks so much for this. I will definitely check out those areas too.  He will be working in East Elmhurst, and I don't have a job yet, so it is more important to be close to his job.

Anywhere that is super dog friendly and has good space for walks would be ideal. I feel like as I am looking for places on Craigslist I keep finding places that look great, but only take dogs less than 30 lbs., in which case I am screwed.  It is so hard not knowing anything about the area....I don't know which neighborhoods are good, and which to stay away from, etc.  I guess I didn't realize how totally overwhelming it would be to move to a totally new place. Embarrassed
