Re: Crazy Westboro Church...
I don't know exactly how they "work" but I know that they keep adding to venues/events they will protest at, in order to get media coverage. I refuse to go to their website, but they do have a listing (almost like a tour date line-up) of where they are going to be, so I am sure there is some geographical aspect to it.
Gotcha!
For some reason, they hate the military, so anything they can do near a military installation, they attack them. I refuse to go to their website, so I don't know exactly why they hate the military.
The root of all of their protests has to do with their anti-homosexuality beliefs.
They believe that the War and, by extension, the death of US soldiers, is a punishment from God for the US "abandoning His morals". In other words, because the US is becoming more accepting/tolerant of homosexuals, God is punishing us by raging a war between us and other countries and killing our soldiers.
'Cause that's a perfectly linear line of thinking and makes total sense.
ETA: Here's a bit from an article I found (I'm dodging their own website but finding information in news articles):
"Westboro's website says the legal dispute is about the "sovereignty of the Living God" and that those who fail to live up to God's standards should be punished. Phelps explains that their decision to picket funerals "is to use an available public platform, when the living contemplate death, to deliver the message that there is a consequence for sin." That sin in their view is homosexuality and all government policies they think support homosexuals."

I won't go on their website bc a) I'm at work and b) I refuse to give them more internet traffic, but I loathe them. like FIA said they protest military funerals/events bc they think it's God's punishment (the death of soldiers etc.)
That said - what's the quote from American President? Freedom of speech is letting someone scream at the top of their lungs in opposition to something that you would spend your life defending at the top of yours?
They suck, but we can be louder.
I love that you quoted The American President, I love that movie. DH hates it, but I will watch Andrew Shepherd take on Bob Rumson any day of the week.
"America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say "You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours."
There's actually a whole theory that it's actual an elaborate front as a money making scheme. That they don't really believe any of it, they are just being as inflammatory as possible to try and force people into violating their rights so they can sue. I'll see if I can find it...
My Goodness...another food blog. Featuring: Macarons from a old post with a photo taken by my mom for a break from my crappy food photos!
I would 100% believe that. It's too BSC, too time consuming and pissed too many people off to be 100% real. Even if they felt anti-gay sentiment was their mission, no one would go about doing it this way with the real intent to change people's minds.
Or maybe I'm too sane.
They've been on my school's campus, they've been in my hometown, now they are going a few miles from my house. I wish people would just ignore them.
