Your desk (non clicky poll)

Is your desk at work messy or organized?

I fail miserably at keeping mine clean. I do a major clean up every few weeks to make sure I'm not missing anything on my to-do list. I try to keep it organized after that and something always happens where I get back from a meeting right before I have to leave so the papers get left on the desk, then someone comes in and drops something off, then I have to find something in the loose leaf papers...before you know it I have stuff ALL OVER.

At my last job, I cleaned my desk every Friday before I went home...tells you how busy I was at that job that I was able to carve out the time to do that, huh?

Re: Your desk (non clicky poll)

  • My desk becomes a train wreck during the day...but I can usually get it cleaned off before I head home. Now that things have slowed down considerably from the beginning of the year, I have time at the end of the day to clean it off.

At my old job, my desk was NEVER clean. I think the cleanest I saw my desk was the day I left - and even then, I'd still left stuff on my desk for the person taking over after me. Craziness.

  • Typically clean.  I am VERY anal about organization in my classroom.  It is essential to functioning as a special ed teacher.

Every grade level has a turn in tray on my desk.  Unfinished work goes in their "in progress" zebra folders (hanging on a rack near my desk).  I have an out tray of copies etc I need made that my parahandles for me.  I have an in tray for anything in my mailbox or when teachers bring me stuff.  My 6 foot table handles all the paperwork I do for ARD's.  Each student's ARD paperwork is stacked neatly until it's copied and filed in their folder.

I have file folders labeled for papers I need a lot, pencils etc are in a jar.  Basically everything is labeled and has it's place.  I harp on my kids if they leave things on my desk, so, they know not to do it :)

I should mention I have OCD, lol!

I wish that worked on my coworkers. I harp on them that I HAVE A MAILBOX and I CHECK IT ALL THE FREAKING TIME and yet they will still come in here and leave stuff on my chair or keyboard when I'm not here. It drives me crazy.

This is when I put snarky notes in my computer screen when I'm gone.  I'd just make up some note, print it and leave it where others can see it.  "Please do not leave things on my desk as they get lost.  My mailbox is the best way to get documents to me".

I'm snarky like that I guess.  My para sort of had to learn that the hard way because she would do that all the time.  So I labeled an "In" and "out" box on my desk.  Maybe you could try that too?

Labels rock my world.  Seriously.  I get giddy when I get office supplies as presents, lol!

I used to do this in my old office- it worked.

As for me...Mine is pretty clean. I typically work in a paper free world....

I envy this!  I so wish I did because I feel like all we do is kill trees around here!

I told someone today I had 6 trees worth of paper on my desk.

How's this for irony: we're talking about being conservative with copying/printing to save money (which, you know, is going to save us the 100k a month we need to break even). My boss prints out a new copy of the "ideas sheet" for saving money for each person at every meeting we have about it.

  • Lawyers are the ultimate tree killers. My desk gets crazy throughout the day because I end up doing 47 things at once on 30 different files. But I straighten it every day. And try to get non-immediate files back out of my office and into the drawers.
  • My desk is spotless.  Seriously.  If I'm not currently working on something, then it is not on my desk.  When I leave at night there is usually not a single piece of paper left out.  I think I compensate for the fact that four out of five of my team members work literally on piles of paper.

I only wish I could keep my house as organized and clean as I keep my desk.

  • Mine is nearly bare, except for my snack stash and family pictures. I hardly ever have hard copies of anything - it's all on the computer.

Most days my desk is a disaster, there's so much paper all over it, I usually get it totally cleaned off every other day, but it's usually covered again a few hours into that next day.  It's a never ending cycle.

  • Always slightly cluttered but not too horrific.
