How long do you think it takes a grown man to assemble and install a basic ceiling fan?

Serious question.

How long would you guess it would take a normal man to do this household task?

Re: How long do you think it takes a grown man to assemble and install a basic ceiling fan?

  • In my house you would be wrong, my friend.  We are going on three and a half hours.

We have no power in the master bathroom or the master bedroom and our DVR is in there.  OUR SHOWS ARE NOT RECORDING.  H is in there with a coal miner type hat trying desperately to finish so we don't miss more TV shows.

He said he started this because he thought it would take a half an hour...

  • Here's how it would go for my DH:

Gathers tools for assembly and start taking down existing light fixture/fan/whatever.

Decides whoever installed the electrical wires is an idiot and did not do it right so runs to Lowe's for some "simple" wiring.

Starts working on that and realizes he has to run through three rooms and the attic.

Almost electrocutes himself and blows something.

Runs to Lowe's for that part.

2 days later I threaten to divorce him if he doesn't get it done.

  • Okay, so we're at four hours and fifteen minutes when H declares the fan is complete.  I walk in our room and he ceremoniously turns the fan on... there is this horrible clicking noise and I ask WTF that is and he says:

"Oh... there was a big white rubberband that came with the parts... I thought it was part of the packaging, but I think it was to prevent that noise..."

HE CAN'T FIND THE RUBBERBAND.  He threw it away with the packaging and now can't find it.

I'm about to lose my shits.

  • See, there's the first trip back to Lowe's. 2 days.

    Sonofabitch.

  • omg I SO feel your pain. I don't remember how long it took in the condo, but I remember lots of arguing, quitting several times....

  • With my husband, he's actually really handy, it's just getting him to finally do whatever it is. We had our TV wall mounting thing sitting in the box behind the TV stand for 6 months before he finally decided to install it. Then he was like, wow, that was easy, I didn't even need help. Six months!!!

  • God Bless FIL because if we didn't have him around to teach DH to do these things, they'd never get done.

DH actually attempted this himself when we lived in Melbourne. Needless to say, FIL had to make a trip down from Jax to finish the job. So in the end, I think it took a week to go up.

  • IT took DH and I an afternoon to install the fan in the guest bedroom. After a few hours we started drinking because it was so ridiculous that we couldn't install it. To this day it still makes a noise when the fan is on.

  • I guess I'm lucky in this respect because my DH is actually very good at things like this. hope yours is working correctly soon.

  • When I first read this I thought "normal man?" maybe an hour. "My husband?", more like two days. Now I see that DH may be normal. Sorry LB!

Oh, and I fully intend to get my dad over to the house for anything wiring related because DH WILL hurt himself if he attempts to do something like this on his own for the first time with no guidance. Without a doubt. We're going to be like this couple.

  • See, my DH is TOO handy. In every project he is a perfectionist and he always goes from having one thing to work on to three since he finds other things that are imperfect.

    This is exactly DH.

  • It takes him 3 hours to get a picture on the wall because he has to measure it out exactly to the centimeter. I gave him a laser level because of that. So a fan, gosh only knows.
  • It would probably take DH half a day, a case of beer and 5 trips to Home Depot. This is why I make my dad a list of things that need to be done while DH is out of town for work :) my dad is like freaking Bob Vila.
