Our dining room has coved ceilings also. It was already painted this color when we moved in.
This corner hutch thing is hard to decorate. The bottom shelf just collects mail and other junk. I wanted to paint the back panels the same color as the walls, but there isn't any spare paint in the basement in that color.
Here is that picture wall I asked about last week. I had to use those command strip thingies to hang them b/c we have plaster walls. They didn't come out very evenly spaced, and they hang away from the wall more than I'd like. I think I will take them down and just use nails, which might ruin the walls.
Re: open house- dining room

Our first floor is open concept, so the living room is the front left corner (when looking at the front of the house) and the dining room is behind it in the back left corner and the kitchen to the right of the dining area.

This is our new table, we just bought it a couple of months ago. It is cherry and the top has an inlay pattern. It is big for the space, but so much nicer than the old Ikea table we had.
I call this the Africa wall.
The other wall is our window. Sorry no picture.
Mary I love the color of the dining room and I love the picture collage.
Holly I love your hutch!
Ok, so this isn't the current photo (our furniture is different) but I don't have any good photos right now and since it is serving as my sewing studio right now, it looks like a tornado went through it.
This is my favorite room in the whole house.
Here is the view looking towards the side/front; where the train table is now our desk:
Here is the view if you are standing in front of that window and looking towards the other side so the LR is to your right:
The left closet has shelves inside and I store kitchen serving stuff there, and the right is our coat closet.
This is the wall hanging that is currently in the alcove; we originally bought it for our bedroom but it didn't fit right there:
This is our rug; there's an area rug under the table and a matching runner next to the table that leads to the kitchen:
An interesting note: the previous owners bought when it was a seller's market, and they had to write a letter with their bid as to why they wanted the house as there were several bids that were very similar. They said their favorite part of the house was the alcove in the dining room, and the sellers had felt the same way to they picked them. We felt the same way and told our sellers that (which is when they told us that story). It's funny that such a simple architectural detail is a big selling point.

This shows most of the window and the transition to the kitchen. More to the right is where we keep the recycle bin and what not so it isn't worth taking a picture of

This!! So so cute!
eee Mary I continue to love your house!
holly, love that table/chairs!
yet another realtor's special. I HATE that light. We actually bought a new one and decided to return it since it was too much hassle to install and remove when we go...
This isn't the best picture but our table and chairs are two toned, black legs.

Here's my dining room! The only thing I want to change in here is the lighting fixture. I need something bigger....
The dining room has three doorways...one to the front hallway, one to the full bath (odd, I know) and one to the kitchen.
Mary - I love your built in hutch/cabinet and your table. Your house is just so cute!
Holly - I love your china cabinet, too! I really want one, but don't want to spend the money right now.
Becky - The chair rail is great. If our dining room was a seperate room, I'd probably put one in it.
Sarah - LOVE your decor!
Like I said yesterday, our dining area is open concept with the kitchen and living room. It's nice, but also kind of limits our options for decorating.
These aren't great pictures, but you can tell that the kitchen is opposite the windows, which look into our backyard. I love those windows. One cool thing it that the kitchen cabinet that is on the end opens both on the kitchen side and the dining room side. We keep our wine glasses and dishes in there. In the first photo, I'm standing in the living room. I think I want to get some sort of china cabinet or hutch eventually. I'm not sure if I want a corner one or one that will go where the painting is. I use a small bookcase right now to kind of display our nicer serving pieces (we don't have china).

We don't have a dining room, so here is our dining area in the kitchen!

Thank you, Jaime, for posting my pictures!! It's frustrating not to be able to do it myself.
As you will see after tomorrow's pictures of the kitchen, our entire living room, dining room and kitchen are actually one big open space. We then have a hallway where the two bedrooms, two bathrooms and laundry room are.
Looking at the pictures of my house makes me like it more (LOL) ... I think when I see it through other peoples' eyes (through pictures) makes me realize that it really is nice. I really hate that we've never painted the walls and I usually can't see past that. There's so much we want to do, but it's just not worth it since this was only supposed to be a temporary home and we're about $80k upside down in the mortgage compared to the value of the condo now, so we're stuck for at least a few more years.

I'm going to show off the before and afters because I am so proud and amazed at the transformation.
Before it was complete wasted space with a low (bulging) ceiling)
This first picture is looking from the patio door that you see in the 3rd picture. (You can't see it but the doorway on the far right is not even 3' wide and then it is a solid wall in the same ugly green color.
(You can sort of see the wall mentioned above in this last picture)
This next picture is a good picture to show the wall during renos. (The wall was no less than 12" thick because it had been built upon so many times with different coverings.) You are looking at the 1" thick cedar board section of the wall. (The same boards were in the ceiling too) We saved all the boards to do something with someday....
Missing wall!
View from the kitchen sink after it was first done.
Currently looks like this:
The photo you can see on that small wall below is from our honeymoon. You ME ladies may recognize it as Portlandhead Lighthouse.
In this last picture all the photos over the door (except the big one) were taken by me during my study abroad in London. The small picture between the patio door and the wood work was a wedding gift from our venue. It is a picture of one of that waterfalls there. The big "picture" on the right by that door is J's family tree dating back to 1744. All of the "artwork" in this room means something to who we are and I love it!
The table and chairs I got from Goodwill. The chairs have been refinished - the table has not yet. hence the tablecloth. (I am not a fan of tablecloths)
For some reason I don't have a picture looking the other direction.
Mary, I love your diningroom!!
Here's our main dining area. We have two off the kitchen but we only use one. The one that is supposed to be the formal dining room has been converted to a bar area. There's no need for us to have two diningrooms and I really hate the formal thing. That's why with our two livingrooms there's no formal one. I want use out of my entire house.
I'm still trying to figure out what to put on the other wall. We don't have window coverings yet for the sliding glass door nor have we painted. We have yet to change out the ugly light fixture and put up new baseboards.
Here's is the bar area, aka formal diningroom which is right off what is supposed to be the formal livingroom (our movie-watching area). We plan on closing off the doorway and making it a solid wall that way we can put the bar up against that wall. Also, we want a bar table or nice chairs in that area. We are in desperate need of changing out the light fixture here too. We've actually added more to the top part where that plant is. It looks much better now with the addition of wine holders, etc.
CRAFTY ME
my read shelf:
I found a better picture of my couches (post from yesterday). This is from when we first moved in and had them delivered. Notice we had no window coverings yet? The couch is massive!
From this next picture you can see where the bar area is off to the side, again when we first moved in. To the left of the picture you can see our TV. Directly across from that are the tan couches and off to the side is the diningroom with the black table. The doorway there is before Andrew made it fancy looking. it looks way better now. I think you can see it in my pics from yesterday.
CRAFTY ME
my read shelf:
Some thing as yesterday, we are still decorating. I want to hang an old world map on the wall in the dining room. We are still looking for our rugs (living and dining room)
The first picture show the relation between the living room and dining room and the two big windows that somehow never showed up in yesterday's pics.
The wall to the right (dingin room and kitchen wall) is a little darked then the wall to the left (living room and dining room wall) You can't really tell in the pictures b/c of the light. B/c of the windows in the house we barely need to turn on the lights.

Here is our "naked" formal dining room. We can't decide on a color, so maybe you gals can help...we are thinking either a blue or a deep red to go with the painting, but what do you ladies suggest?! In addition to paint, we'll be adding in crown and chair molding and replacing the light to match the bronze detail on the china cabinet.
View from kitchen doorway-
Views from formal living room-
I'll be sewing sheer curtains and a probably a swag type curtain once we decide on a color.
Our dining room is super tiny, just like a good chunk of the house. The table was DH's when he was a kid. I don't love it but it was the right price for now, free!
The missing chair is in the kitchen because Zoe the cat has to sit in there with us while we cook
The hutch was in my house and I absolutely love it. I was thrilled when my mom said they didn't want it anymore! The chair is from DH's grandmother's house and survived Katrina, he recently restored it, I love the face.
Holly, I love your furniture!
We don't have a formal dining room and our dinette is not very attractive. It sits right between the family room & the kitchen, with the sunroom off of it. It's nothing special and has an ugly old table in it, so no pictures. I'm dieing for new furniture, but it's gonna be a while. I'll keep the old ugly table though as it was a wedding gift TO my grandparents way back in the '40s. Then they handed it down to my mom when she and I moved into our first house.
