TR: car activities?

William is most likely going to be riding in the car for about 7 hours (each way) this weekend with just his daddy.  I've got plenty of snacks lined up for him.  But I usually sit in the backseat and help entertain him.  What kind of fun activities can a 2.5 yr old boy do in the car by himself?  I have a mini magna doodle, and we're going to rig up his toy bag to his seat so he can reach those (until he throws them on the floor).  I was thinking a felt pad with shapes so he can make "pictures" with it.  He's not good at getting marker caps on, and we're afraid he'll drop crayons and they'll melt in the car-since it will be about 70+ where they're headed.  I've got a few small new books and toys I'm going to wrap for him to open, but they won't last for 2 days of a long trip!  If you all have any ideas at all, let me know!

  • For Ella's hospital stay I went to Walgreens and got some color with water books on clearance for like $1.25! They helped a lot!
  • Color Wonder coloring books with markers!! They won't color on anything but the paper.  :) They stay good forever even without the caps.

We also have a little touch leap pad that he can borrow. (We have two.) The consignment shops often have them too.

We have the Color Wonder markers.  I'll throw them in.  If he ruins them (he likes to eat them for some reason), we'll get him more I guess.

Is the leap pad easy to use?  I don't want him frustrated that he doesn't know how to use it.  We might take you up on that!

  • It's pretty easy. If he runs into a snag just tell him to push the Go button.  lol! katen always forgets to push the go button on each page to make it work.

  • We use the Magnadoodle, Color Wonder paper and markers, and the Water WOW Doodle Book (http://www.amazon.com/Sesame-Street-Water-Doodle-Book/dp/1595240896) as our main car entertainment.  I also keep lots of books and Happy Meal toys in a baggy in the car and she only gets them when we are in there so they are relatively new to her.

Does Will like music?  How about a new kids CD for him to listen to?  I know the West Des Moines library lets you check them out just like books.

  • The Magnadoodle is the #1 entertainer in our car as well..do you have a travel DVD player? That will keep Ava occupied for at least an hour at a time.. maybe swing by the Dollar Tree and grab some random little toys for him like Silly Putty, some new Hot Wheels.. they always have random seasonal toys there too..
