Opinions Before I go off on my landlord??

We're having a wasp problem. We've had about 5 wasps in our basement over the last week. We also killed 6 on the screened porch and one even flew into the shower! (While we were in it - H screamed so loud I pissed myself - literally. Good thing I was in the shower -right?).

Anyway I just texed my landlord and update (had emailed over the weekend) that I think there must be a nest in the high gutters since that's where I see them flying too - think two story house on the very top. She texts me back - and I quote "The only thing I can tell you is to see if you can get a ladder and see if you can get the nest down".

What??? Not only do we not have an extension ladder, but am I crazy to think this is not my responsibility? We pay rent to them and they fix house things. Right??

This is my first time renting an actual house (not condo) - how does this work? Landlord responsibility - yes?

What??? Not only do we not have an extension ladder, but am I crazy to think this is not my responsibility? We pay rent to them and they fix house things. Right??  You're not crazy...this should definitely be their responsibility!  What does your rental agreement say about stuff like this?

This is my first time renting an actual house (not condo) - how does this work? Landlord responsibility - yes?  I think it should be, but check your agreement and local laws.

  • I would think it would be their responsibility, but really I am not sure.  I would check on the local laws in your area to make sure if it is or not.  If it is then I would contact her again with the actual code section and let her know that she need to take care of it by law.
  • I just read my lease and it doesn't say anything about pest one way or the other. Crud!

  • Does anyone in your office know the laws regarding landlord responsibility for your area?

  • They all say it depends on the lease. Not sure on the grey area. I'm sure we'll end up fixing it and paying for it. Our landlords stink!

  • it just seems like common sense that they would deal with pests on their property. if you had mice would it be your responsibility? of course not. if you had bed bugs they would have to spray... i would politely respond.... i mean does he really want you falling off a ladder on his property? his response was absurd. good luck.

  • Based on my google search if it's there at the time of move in it's landlord's responsibility. If it's after it's ours.

Wonder how this works since they had a wasp infested recliner on the back patio until the day we moved in...guess the wasps moved to higher ground.

It just makes me mad that we're really good renters - their house looks better now than when they lived there and they basically tell me to shove off when I tell them we have wasps.

    Frustrating.

  • Oh dear - I just texted her about the wasp recliner and her reply was "No, the recliner had bees not wasps".

    Seriously??

My reply was - well I guess we're lucky we don't have been infestation too!

  • Omg. I know just what you're dealing with!  We had a bat once in our apt and the landlady was totally unconcerned and told me not to worry bc it wouldn't hurt me.  Hello, RABIES?!?!

Sorry you have to deal with this.  I'd keep asking and maybe she'll become so annoyed with you, she'll just come do it!

  • Stop texting, start calling your land lord on the phone or sending her a letter or emailing. You want documentation of your requests. In CA pests are the landlord's responsibility but you'll need to get your state's code. We just went through this and lost $1500+ improvements we made to our last property. Total disaster, I don't want you to go through the same thing.

  • that sucks that your state says it's your responsibility. i guess just have your h find a ladder and go up and deal with it. your landlord sucks, though.

  • Unfortunately I can't email because she has no internet access and I'm at work.

Good news though - after two hours of texting I am victorious! She told me to stop opening the windows b/c when I open the windows they come it - it happened to them all the time. (She must think I'm an idiot).

    1. I have not opened a window.

    2. She just told me that there was a problem BEFORE we moved in. (We moved in late October so the wasps must have been going into wasp hibernation or whatever they do).

I didn't even have to go into full beeotch mode - just half. Their handyman will be there Sunday to look at it and we're not paying for it.

    Success!

Can't believe it had to come to a frustration point though. Obviously she doesn't realize how good she has it with us as tenants. Maybe I should tell her a few horror stories and then she'll feel better about it.

Oh, and I called the city only to be told that they have no idea. That's a landlord/tenant conversation only. Interesting.

  • Wow what a crappy situation to put you and your H in!! Good thing she finally agreed to the handy man coming by though.

  • Here's hoping it's just one nest and he can take care of it! If they're in the chimeny or something we're screwed!
