New car - suggestions/recs on these vehicles?

I am starting to test drive cars this week! DH and I decided a month or two ago that once I got a job for fall, we would start looking at new cars! (And I got an offer a few weeks ago - what an awesome reward, huh??)

II'm excited because I've never test driven a car - I've always bought hand me downs. My car in high school was my brother's. He was a senior when I was a freshman, so when he went off to college my sophomore year, I bought it from him. When I was in college, a friend of my parents were selling their camry. My parents bought it because it was an amazing price and in amazing shape. They knew I was going to need a new car eventually. The car I had in high school died, and I bought the Camy from mom and dad. I'm so excited to shop for my own car!!

I def. want to test drive a new camry. I love them, but they may be a tad out of our price range. (We are talking about buying brand new, or a 2010.)

We've talked about getting something a little bigger, like a small SUV. We don't plan on buying another car for a long time, and whatever we buy for me we won't replace for easily 10 years (esp. if we o buy new.) We plan on it being the "family car" when we have kids, since DH's truck isn't big enough. Since we are thinking kids in the next 2-3 years, it makes since to get something now thats a little bigger and has the room for some little ones.

We've also looked at a few Ford Escapes. I really like the look of them. We kind of looked at Jeeps, but DH's brother has a Liberty and there is like NO leg room in the back seat. I also like the look of Rav4s (Toyotas SUV).

Anyone drive any of this and like them? Hate them? Other suggestions?

Re: New car - suggestions/recs on these vehicles?

  • My cousin's girlfriend just bought a brand spanking new Nissan Rogue.  It's adorable, affordable, with room for kids.  Nissan's are great cars!  DH has an '09 Xterra (that he bought brand spanking new in '08) and it's very nice, drives great.

FIL has an Escape, it's also nice.  Bigger than it looks inside.  Drives nice... but I prefer the look of the Ford Edge over the Escape, that's just me.  I think the Edge is more expensive.

Good luck, car shopping is so fun!  My car and I are about to hit our one year anniversary together in 2 weeks :)  Go with your gut.  You might be surprised, I definitely was!

  • Congrats on getting to car shop!!! I was in the same boat with hand me down cars, so I know how exciting it is to start looking and driving cars just for you.

Personally, I would be leery of Jeeps.  Everyone I know who has had one says they get terrible gas mileage.  They also get really loud when they're older. I'm not a Ford girl, so can't help with the Escape.

My SIL has a RAV4 and loves it.  I've driven around with her and really  liked it.  The interior was really nice and it was quiet.  Also, like PP, Nissans are super nice.  My family had 2 in a row that ran forever and never had major fix issues.  The Nissan Frontier is actually what my mom and I were in when we had the accident.  I am confident that it saved our lives.  If I buy a truck again, I want another Nissan.

I don't know how important price is to you, but buying new versus buying something 2 years old or so can make a big difference.  If you look around, you may be able to find a slightly broken in vehicle with not many miles that will be a lot less expensive than getting something brand new.

    Happy car hunting!!!

  • congrats on getting a new vehicle!!!!

I just bought a jeep patriot and I love it! This too will become the family car someday. It has a lot of room in the back for supplies and folds down for more room. I find there is enough room in the back seat. I love that it just automatically kicks into all wheel drive, it's not too too big and it rides smooth and quiet.

SIL drives a dodge journey and it's awesome! It has 3 rows of seats and the 3rd row folds down for extra room.

My friend drives a nissan rogue and she loves it. She has a 4 year old and she says it's plenty of room for all the "kid stuff." She also test drove a jeep compass, but said it was just too small for a family car.

My friend just went from a honda accord to a honda  cr-v and she has nothing but good things to say about it. it rides nice and quiet too.

    Hope that helps!

  • Yay for a new car!! That's so fun!

I don't have any recommendations on the specific cars you asked about, but I just wanted to through in that I have an Accord ('07) and I love it. Great gas mileage, never had any problems and it will last forever.

MIL has an Hyundai Sante Fe (or Tuscan - I can't remember cause they both look the same, one is just slightly bigger than the other) and it's great. It's a smaller SUV but drives like a car. Also good on gas and is affordable.

I really think it's a matter of personal preference - all the calls you mentioned are nice. It is going to come down to affordability, comfort and feel of the car.

    Good luck and have fun!

  • Thanks ladies - I can already tell this is going to be a project!! I'm glad we aren't planning on buying right away, it will give us some time to decide what to get!

I think right now we are loving the Ford Escape (DH likes the edge, but I really think it's out of our range), the Rav4, and the Sante Fe...I know a guy with one and I like the look of it.

DH just called - we are going to go look this afternoon. I'll keep ya all updated!

  • I love the look of the RAV4, and my aunt has one and they LOVE it!  Also my older sister bought a CRV when they had their first kid, he's now turning 9 and it has a ton of miles on it and they haven't had any problems at all with it.
  • I am a Honda fan.  I have had my Accord for eleven and a half years!!!!  I am thinking of a Honda SUV next time around!
  • Last September, I bought a brand new 2010 Mazda3 4-door sedan...it's smaller, so if you're going for the family size car, it might not be what you're looking for.  But I absolutely love it.  It's very sporty and fun to drive, but it's also very safe and inexpensive.  I never test drove any other Mazda, but from my car, I would say that it's a great brand, and I know they have a bunch of bigger sized cars.

Have fun test driving...it's a blast!

  • I'm a HUGE fan of the Ford Escapes...in fact, when my car finally craps out, it will be what I purchase! They ride nice, and have great room inside. Plus, for an SUV, they're pretty good on gas mileage. And it doesn't hurt that they're nice looking :)

I'm also a fan of the Rav4...my best friend drives one and it's a great car with lots of room inside.

I'm more of an American made girl though...so my vote is for the Escape :)
