If you had an infant during the summer...

what did you do as far as swaddling? What type of blanket did you use? At what age do you generally stop swaddling them when they sleep?

We don't have central a/c, so we'll only have a window unit to help cool the nursery down on really hot days. I'm sure we can keep it to a reasonable temp, but I'm also wondering if having some nice thin swaddling blankets would be good as opposed to the thicker, flannel-like receiving blankets we currently have. PW just posted about a brand of muslin ones, which is what got me thinking about this.

Re: If you had an infant during the summer...

  • I plan on getting some of these.
  • We used Aden & Anais Swaddling blankets and just the cotton SwaddleMe Blankets like Amy just posted. And if it's warm I just left her in her diaper in the swaddle w/o clothes. But if you have an a/c in the room then it will probably be fine!

  • I used halo. They worked great bc of the velcro. Not too heavy..Allie was born in July. We went from swaddling, to sleepsuit(around 3 or 4 months) to nothing at 6 months. Our pedi told us to stop. Luckly she didn't struggle that much with the change.
  • I used the receiving blankets from Carters.  They were not that heavy and worked great.
  • we mostly used cotton receiving blankets and we had a few of the summer infant swaddle blankets.

  • Since I just touched and held a lot of these LOL I'd recommend the cotton swaddle pods for the newborn phase and then some lightweight swaddle mes for when the baby is older.  They do have a new muslin line.  How long you do it will totally depend on the baby.  Nolan hated being swaddled too much.  Layne loved it.  I have friends who have swaddled their six month olds...but I think until about three or four months is pretty common.
  • I didnt swaddle.  To me it seemed like a lot of work and its something that people struggle with to get babies to sleep not swaddled later on so i skipped it.

so my advice is dont get that many swaddles to start with till you know you will use them what ever kind you decide on. Not all babies like to be swaddled.
