Eco Friendly Baby Shower

We are throwing a baby shower for my sister this summer. She is extremely environmentally conscious in everything she does, lives very "green".  We wanted to do an eco friendly shower, with an earthy theme, just looking for ideas. We are having all local organic food, and compostable tableware, and asking guests not to wrap the gifts. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Re: Eco Friendly Baby Shower

  • I just saw a blog where they used empty cans (beans, veggies) as a mini-pot for a flower.  Decor and favor in one.

  • Depending on the size, using real dishes and silverware is better than compostable. That only works for a small party, though.

Skip silly decorations - streamers, balloons, plastic crap. If it's summer, perhaps someone has fresh flowers from their garden?

If the mom has a cloth diaper registry, point people to it! I would have loved to get some cloth diapers.

  • Another option for decorations would be to use fabric/durable decorations that would also be used in their nursery (bunting, etc.).

  • I just had this super cute idea! The presents could be the decorations. Have clothes lines up in the house (like streamers) and pin up the baby clothes and cloth diapers! It'd be colorful and functional! Also, this would work for a surprise baby shower. You might want to have the guests show up before the momma! And each person could make tags for their gifts so the momma knows who got her what. You could have tags and markers there at the house. :) I hope you like that idea, because I so want to through the party now!
  • Ask for the gift wrap to be "old newspaper" instead, or most guests will ignore the direction because they will be afraid to be the only one showing up with a bare box (unless she has super-green friends as well).  This is what happened at my bridal shower.

On a side note - my friends attempted to throw a "green" shower for me which was a total disaster.  Since my friends have no idea what that is, and often make fun of me for my efforts - It was the total opposite of green!  Good luck, it sounds like you are really committed to the theme and I am sure your friend will love her shower!

  • I got gifts wrapped on receiving blankets, towels etc. It was awesome!

Can you do evites instead of paper invites and have the RSVP's be via phone and email?
