Cord Blood Banking

Hey everyone,

I'm just wondering how many folks have done the cord blood banking and if you have any pros/cons.  It's so expensive yet I know you only have one chance of collecting.

Re: Cord Blood Banking

  • We seriously considered it, but after talking about it more with my OB decided against it.  Feel free to email and I can give you some details. xo1375@hotmail.com

We decided not to bank the cord blood purely because of the cost involved. If we were delivering at W&I, I would have donated to the RI Blood Center's Cord Blood bank. It's free to donate, and if your baby or a family member ever needs the cells, if they are still in the bank you get them back. If they aren't in the bank, they track down the closest match for you. If you're delivering there, it might be an option.

  • We donated the cord blood through Cryobanks International, Inc. (we're in MA).

  • I did donate the cord blood to the RI Blood Center. I filled out a couple of forms, got a blood test and they took care of the rest. All we had to do was bring the box for collection with us when we went to the hospital. I couldn't justify the cost of doing it privately but given the history of diseases in our family I wanted to have something just in case. Doing a donation (vs private) made me feel like even if we don't need it someone else who does need it might get a second chance. (and I did deliver at W&I)
  • good post.  so much has changed with this since i had DD.  I am considering the free one this time around through the Blood Center.

Same here. It was SO much money, we just couldn't do it.  I planned to donate at W &I, but because I had a fever throughout the delivery, they wouldn't let me.

Basically what I would have written myself - we donated through the RIBC too - it was the best option for us!

  • I donated cord blood for both my kids at UMass. filled out paper work and that was it.
