What do we think of the JCrew ad?
Article in the Sun about it here
No big deal? Mountain out of a molehill? Gender confusion? Inappropriate?
Re: What do we think of the JCrew ad?
People are making way too big a deal about this!
My sister and I used to use our little brother and our younger male cousin as real live dolls. We dressed them up, do their hair and nails... 10 minutes later we'd all be outside putting Barbie and GI Joe in Tonka trucks and pretending to have a monster truck rally.
Playing pretend and dress up as a child is normal and fine. Neither my brother or cousin ever had gender issues. One is a construction worker and the other is a police officer. Both are married with little girls of their own. Now their daughters do their hair and their nails.
I think the outcry is ridiculous. Painting a little boy's toenails aren't going to confuse him. Yes, he may be mocked by other children, and that's terribly sad, but it's more of a lesson that the other children need to be taught better, not that a little boy can't have pink toenails.
As an aside, I gave my husband a gift certificate for a pedicure back when we were dating and he came home with orange toenails.
Odd in real life? Not at all. Odd scene for a catalogue? Yes. Which is why that shirt the kid is wearing will probably be one of the most seen items of catalogue clothing this side of the millenium. It's brilliant marketing - nothing more.

Ditto this. I saw thongs for 7 year olds when I was in NY and people are making a bigger deal of this? Scary.
Right?!
ETA: He told me that he was torn between having them painted rainbow colors (a la 12-year olds: one red nail, one orange, one yellow, etc.) or having them all painted orange. I'm not sure what swayed him or which would have been more amusing.
I find it ridiculous that people are this upset by it. Then, add on that J.Lo said in an interview with People Magazine that her son wants his nails painted when he sees she's painting her daughters. Little kids do silly stuff.
I'd rather paint a boy's nails than market a pushup bra or skinny jeans to little kids.
I think it's ridiculous. Little boys shouldn't have pink toenails.
Seriously?
No, I'm just trying to stir the pot a bit here. Things have been dull lately. But I have to go to lunch so have to stop the charade of my post now or else it will get out of hand and I'll be ripped apart over the course of the hour while I'm away from my desk, lol. So it was a big fat FAIL on my part.
Thank God. I was going to ask what aliens took over your body and where in the hell_ Becky went.
This is my exact feeling. If a parent or a big sister painted a boy's toenails pink, who cares? If someone was constantly painting a boy's toenails pink, I'd wonder what they were doing--wasn't there some curiosity around how Angelina Jolie was kind of dressing her daughter as a boy and cutting her hair short? Not necessarily wrong, but it does pique curiosity.
For this, I think it's 100% marketing and in a way that stirs controversy that's not disgusting like A&F's thongs and push-ups for 11-year-olds. Brilliant.

I agree completely! I would rather my (hypothetical) son have his toes polished, than my 9 year old girl wearing a padded bikini! I can't see how anyone could think that is ok.

Well hi back....
Is your job ok with you Nesting only when it's certain content?
I think most of the people who are enraged by it probably aren't the target market of J. Crew, especially crew cuts in the first place.
