News on Ella

I wish I could say that there is nothing wrong and everything was a fluke, but I can't and we expected this.  What I can say though is that the bad news they gave me was the best of all the scenarios that could have happened...if that makes sense.

I have a 3yo with actually diagnosed migraines :-(  Not surprising since we have a strong family history of them and when my sister gets them she actually has stroke like symptoms.  Ella's get so severe that she has seizures...starting out small and they get bigger as the migraine intensifies.  There is stuff that can be done for them, like medicine, but the medicine is so harsh that we are going to see if it is possible for her to recognize them and tell me when they are coming on first and get her motrin soon enough or if she is having a seizure that I recognize I will have to giver her a rectal tylenol.  She is still at a very high risk for a Grand Mal seizure as they are pretty sure we have not seen the worst of this.  We will now have a syringe of valuum (s/p) in the house in case that happens.  Dr. Palat calls that our insurance policy.  If Ella loses consciousness and I call 911 then I will administer the valuum.  It is all still VERY scary and I cannot imagine being 3 and going through this!  If the seizures seem to be getting worse or the tylenol and motrin don't help at all, then we will have to talk about medication, but for now I am passing on it.  Some of that medication can really alter personaliity and I love my sweet little girl just the way she is!

Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers, they have been greatly appreciated!

Re: News on Ella

  • Well I am very glad to hear that it is migraines and not something more serious! Poor thing to deal with migraines at her age.. I hope that she never has the Grand Mal that they are afraid of and that you are able to manage her pain/seizures with basic pain meds.. Did they say if she will grow out of it at all? Or maybe not because of the strong family history..

  • What a lot to digest. Not to minimize the gravity of the situation but I'm so glad is isn't something much worse. That's still pretty bad though. Any chance she'd grow out of it or is this a lifetime thing? Poor kiddo.  :(

  • Poor baby! At least you know and you can be prepared for some of those scary scenarios. Your family remains in my prayers.

  • I was just thinking about you/Ella and wondering what you found out.  Glad it isn't the worse case scenario, but like pp's, that is still a lot for a little girl.  Hang in there and may that valium never be needed.

Honestly, I feel like I was minimizing the situation...that was what my smiley face on fb was for because I was happy with the news. I knew all of the possibilities though, and I was rooting for this one. I know that seems horrible, but they had told us it WAS something...we were beyond thinking it was a fluke, so since it had to be something I am most ok with this. Also, since it is genetic this will most likely be around forever although she could possibly grow out of the seizures, but we can't tell for sure!
  • Glad to hear you finally got some answers and that they were the ones you were hoping for at this point.

  • I am glad it isn't something worse, but I am really sorry for you all that poor little Ella has to have such horrible headaches!  :(  I hope that you are able to effectively manage it in a way that you are most comfortable.

  • That's so hard... for Ella and mommy!  But I hope you feel some relief now knowing the answers and what to be prepared for in case of emergency.

I was diagnosed with severe migraines growing up too (although I was older, about 5 or 6 when diagnosed and I never had a seizure).  I did grow out of them by the time I hit middle school. I hope she does the same.  Hang in there!!

  • Poor girl! I feel so bad that she has to experience migranes at her age. Like pps said, though, I am glad to hear that it is the least serious of the scenarios you were presented with. Ella is lucky to have such a great mama who takes such great care of her!  Hugs to you!

  • If it has to be something, at least it's the least severe, right?  Poor Ella - I hope you find the best way to manage this for her.
