Applying for jobs when you are employed

Two main questions:

1. When/if they ask if they can contact your current employer, but your current employer doesn't know you are applying/searching/interviewing, does it look bad to say no?

2. How do you handle the interviews when you have a job? When I moved to Boston I had three interviews in one week- if I get that amount of interviews this time around (here's hoping, kind of), there is no way I can take the time to go to all of them.  I only have 2 more days left to take until July (we don't get vacation until we've been there a year). Can you ask the interviewer to handle the interview early AM or late afternoon or is it bad to ask them to fit your schedule?

TIA :)

Re: Applying for jobs when you are employed

  • 1. I usually say don't contact unless they have an offer, or to contact me first

    2. You can ask them to fit your schedule, but you should be somewhat flexible. If 3 jobs want interviews in a week, see if you can spread them out. You can easily tell them you have projects going on at work and you won't be available until the following week, etc.

  • 1. I don't think it looks bad to say "no".

    2. I always had "doctor's appointments". 3 in one week could be tough though. I would probably make something up and tell my boss I have 3 related appointments to get something checked out that are all in a row. No one will for details.

  • Good advice from everyone- try and have interviews late and early trust me the H R people will understand if you need to meet the following week!

  • I'm in a similar position, here's what I've been doing:

     1.  I let them know they can contact my current employer after an offer is made.  No one has had any issues with this.

    2.  I try to schedule interviews in the morning so that I can come into work after.  If you are in the position of scheduling multiple interviews in a week, see if you can take a personal day and do them all in the same day.

  • You have to apply for jobs to be safe.  It should not matter to the employer whether or not you say they can contact your current employment.  I did the whole "doctor appointment" thing too!  It works, just don't do it multiple times in a week or they might get suspicious :-P
