Vacation / shipping Wine FYI

We just got back from Napa/Sonoma, and much to my delight, we were able to check our wine back with us on the airplane!   We got two containers at UPS that are just regular boxes with styrofoam inserts for $18 apiece.  Then it was $25 each to check them on Virgin America.  Everything got here in perfect shape, and for a total of $86 -- much cheaper than the $80 *per box* that the UPS affiliate would have charged.

On a side note, thanks to everyone for the Napa/Sonoma suggestions!  We had a fabulous time.  I'm writing up a trip review that I'll share soon, but in the meantime, many thanks :)

Re: Vacation / shipping Wine FYI

  • shipping from Napa was much cheaper... .did VA charge only $25 for each bag -- not $25 for the first and more for the second?

we opted for shipping bc I wanted the insurance in case anything broke....

  • Awesome! Enjoy your wine!
AlternaTickers - Cool, free Web tickers
  • $25 for each bag, but my hubz and I carried on our actual luggage.

Where did you ship from in Napa?  That will be good to know for next time ;-)

gtown - thanks, we will!  I'm already scheming another trip there, so I need to finish the wine up first, right? ;-)

  • ah, that's the difference - we were in  CA (not Napa only) for 9 days so we had checked luggage. I'm glad your wine made it through -- honestly, that would have scared me. we paid too much to lose a bottle! :)

we used Buffalo Shipping, right on Hwy 29 in Napa. Was recommended by Cakebread and it worked out fine -- we stopped there on our way out of town and packed it all up and shipped it out. We had it sent UPS ground bc we were not in a rush .... so it hasn't gotten here yet... so I should probably put a big ol' asterisk on this post in case it never gets here, or is broken!

Funny - or sad -- wine story. Our first stop, as I noted in my recap post, was at Duckhorn. We apparently drank SO much that we ordered a $75 bottle of wine. Which is WAY out of our normal price range. That shipment was sent from Duckhorn and arrived yesterday, much to my AMEX chagrin. I'm not saying the guy charged us for something we didn't get -- we did -- or that we didn't order -- bc, again, we drank a lot at that tasting. Just ... wine goggles.
