Can you educate me on the difference between the AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G and the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D?  Is it the quality of the glass itself?  Basically, what does the f/1.4G have to offer to make it worth the extra $100?

Also, I don't remember, is the prime lens you have now 35mm or 50mm?  If it's 35mm, what are the shots that you think you're missing out on with the shorter focal length?

  • I am going to jump on in this thread rather than creating a new one....

Kendra - which camera do you have?  Do you also have the D90?  Also, what lenses do you have, or are you still using the kit lens?

  • Yes, I have a D90.  I just have the 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens.  It's a decent lens with a decent range, but I want something that works better in low light, focuses faster, and has better optics.
  • LOL, no, I really can't. I actually don't know why the 1.4G would be better than the 1.4D  -- if autofocus were a non-issue like it is for your D90.  The technology is newer, but that doesn't necessarily make it better. I would read reviews for either/both on adorama, BHphoto, and Amazon. A lot of the reviews compare them, but I can't remember reading anything that made a compelling case for the G. The reason *I* would choose it would be for the autofocus on my camera.

Here's a link to a good blog post about the 35 mm.  (the blogger is AFWells on the photog board, and I've never met her in person, but I'd bet money she has to be one of the nicest people I'd ever meet. She's super helpful.)

The 35 does really well indoors, because of the tight spaces. I can see how 50 would be tougher indoors. Try it with your kit lens -- set it on 35 for a while and then 50. You'll get a good idea of which you prefer.

The 50 is a better focal length for portraits. The 35 can cause unflattering distortion.  Here's a link to a good post about distortion.  (the blogger is pianoplayingsarah on the photog board. She doesn't post a lot about photography, but her blog is a good read anyway because the writing is excellent and honest, the pictures are great, and she has triplet 3-year-old girls, ffs).

There's something complicated that I don't understand well enough (maybe someone more knowledgeable can chime in, or ask on the photog board) about focal length and a crop (cropped?) sensor, which you have. Basically, it means that the focal length isn't "true" as it would be on a full-frame. I don't get it well enough to explain it, but look into that and get more information (accurate information)

Not to complicate your decision, but I'd add the 85 into your consideration. If I were to get a new body first, I might consider that, but there isn't an affordable option for my camera, I don't think.

HTH, but I suggest asking the photog board, too. Some of them have both and actually know what they're talking about. Stick out tongue

  • Thanks, Kate.  I've been really trying to narrow down which lens I want.  It's going to be a b-day present to myself if DH doesn't get it for me.  Wink

I've perused some forum talk about 1.4 vs 1.8 and 35mm versus 50mm and all I can conclude from it is that everyone has a different opinion and seems happy with what they have.
