Would it be crazy

To run a full marathon one month after starting law school? This training for Riverbank has me thinking about continuing to train for a full (which is something I've always wanted to do). For those who have conquered 26.2, how hard is it to get there from 25km? Is that last month of training going to be too much with adjusting to a rigorous school schedule?

Re: Would it be crazy

  • I know absolutely nothing about running, but I would be concerned about the timing.  You're probably going to be slammed with reading and assignments at that time, and it's going to be a huge adjustment.  I feel like training for a marathon would just add more stress.  Unless, of course you're one of those people who finds running to be relaxing... then it might be a good thing.

  • Running in general is a great stress relief for me and I do plan to continue running for fitness throughout school. However, training for a big race is a little more intense as there is a component of obligation. There would be about three weeks of overlap between school and the race (on 9/17 in my hometown), but those last weeks are step down weeks in the training plan, so other than the week after I start school (which would have a 20 mi run) the distances are very manageable.
  • I think you'll be fine - I haven't trained for a marathon but Andy has.  That last month might actually be the easiest time - the last 2 weeks will probably be taper, so you'll only have one or two long runs in that month to accomodate.

I know nothing about how strenuous the first month of law school is, however.  I still don't think it would be hard to find 4 hours on a Saturday a couple of times for your long run - if you want to fit it in you will be able to.

    Good luck!

  • This is the schedule I am following:

    http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/novices2.htm

It's the same one I used for my first marathon last October. I know nothing about law school, but if your schedule will allow 3 midweek runs, one weekend long run (up to about 4 hours' worth, plus drive time if you do it elsewhere), and one day of cross-training (a bike ride?) I say go for it.

And if you do, let me know--you're welcome to join my running group's runs anytime!

  • Kate, I was also looking at Hal's Novice 2 plan. Is anyone in your group planning to do the Spring Lake Oktoberfest marathon? That's the one I'm thinking of. I would definitely be up for a group run, particularly on the 15 mile + days. Thanks to everyone for all of the thoughts. My H is really opposed to the idea, but he has been a little irrational lately, so I wanted to get more feedback.

Several of our members did it last year! I ran the half with a bunch of friends as a training run (the schedule called for 12 that day). It was SUPER rainy. Almost didn't happen b/c of the storms!

I do not think the ones who ran the full would do it again, however. I remember the half course being mighty hilly, and if that's the case for the full, it could be a doozy of a first. :z Also, the food at the end (more like the organization) left something to be desired. Perhaps that would be better this year since last year was the first one, I believe...

If you'd like, I can ask them for sure what they thought of it. The ones who ran are all veteran marathoners.

  • Kate, specic feedback on the full would be great. I could always just run the half if it looks like the full is no good. Also, the course runs really close to my house (in fact parts of it cover ground that I run almost every week right now). So it wouldn't be hard for me to incorporate the hilly parts into my training this summer so I would be prepared.

OK I posted a question for them on our Facebook page. I'll keep you posted! (Of course, you are also welcome to "like" us and check it out yourself if you want.) :)
