Gardeners... a ? for you re: mulch

(might be the stupidest question i've asked to date...)

Do I need to remove last years mulch before putting down new mulch this year?

I've cleaned up the weeds, tidied up, planted some new plants and a lilac bush, and now I've got to move on to mulch.  Not really sure how to proceed....

Thanks for any advice!

Re: Gardeners... a ? for you re: mulch

  • you vna lay down a new layer on top of the old. You might want to "fluff" up the old stuff so that it's not matted down, but that's not necessary.

Kastle, or other master gardeners here, may have differing opinions, but I've always just new on top of old and have no problems.

(don't make more work for yourself if not necessary...:))

  • I think my mom does what Pam said - just kinda fluff it up.

  • Nope!  Just lay it down.

Before putting it down, you might want to sprinkle some Preen.  It will prevent weeds from growing.

great idea, ChCh.... they make a Preen for flower beds, too, KiahJ, so you can protect what you want to grow.  I use this a lot.... I wish there was something more environmentally friendly but my life is too short to be pulling weeds constantly.

    YAY!

I was hoping this would be the answer!

We have a tiny little garden that lines our front walkway and our landscaper wanted $250 to mulch it.  I was considering paying it if I had to remove the old and put down the new... but I'm pretty sure you guys just saved me $200!  There is no way that it would take more than 6-8 bags of mulch.

I'll check out the Preen too - I assume that I can find this at Home Depot?

Thank you thank you thank you!!

Depending on how much you need, Costco had a huge tub of Preen for $19.95 when I was there this weekend.  For a small bed, yes you can get it at Home Depot, Lowes or even Walmart.

  • you probably only need the size that's at HD, Lowes, etc -- looks kinda like a gallon of milk, has a shaker spout (it's granular). Be careful when shaking out, as it will kill plants it touches, too -- sometimes I pour into my (gloved) hand and sprinkle from there to have more control. It does a great job of helping to keep weeds at a minimum around plants, etc. - the worst part of gardening, to me, is pulling the damned clover and dandelions!)

  • You can get mulch for free at the Rockville transfer station near Shady Grove - it's bag and transport your own, but free.

  • We mulched last weekend...  too bad you missed the big sale at HD!  They had it for $1.35 a bag!!!!  We used 20 bags, and it cost us less than $40!

The Preen is definitely at HD.  The big milk gallon sized thing covers around 600 sq ft, if that helps.  I searched all over the package, and had a hard time finding that number.  They sell a smaller one, too.... so, if you only have a couple of flower beds, I'd get the container that's the size of like a Clorox wipes container.

(oh, P.S. - sorry to all of my environmental nesties.  At least I recycle now!)

  • You can also place a piece of cardboard in front of your plants like a shield when you're sprinkling to prevent the Preen (or whatever) from getting on the plants.

Thanks for all the great advice!

I got some Preen, 10 bags of mulch, more salvia and some poppies... did a little planting this afternoon and I'll hit the Preen and mulch tomorrow... in between conference calls :)
