Desperately need time management tips

I am in the midst of a large project and here I am typing on the Nest - I should mention that I am a freelance writer - so I don't have a team or planning meetings to keep me on task. I have a terrible time managing time and not interrupting myself. 

Please ring in with your time management tips and tricks! Especially if they involve working from home.

  • what helps me when I have to have something done for a given deadline is to write out an agenda, a list and then as I do them, I check them off the list.
  • First, break down the project into manageable pieces or phases (depending on what makes sense for the work you're doing). Second, make a calendar with deadlines for each of those pieces. To determine the deadlines, start with the final deadline and work your way back. Be realistic so that this is a calendar that you'll actually stick to.

    At the end of every day, make a list of what you need to get done the next day in order to stay on track. It's a lot easier to get started each morning when you know exactly what manageable piece you need to complete for the day.You could even go as far as scheduling how long you will spend on each task each day, also allowing some time for breaks, being on the Nest, etc.! (For example, 9:00-10:00, write outline for Section 1. 10:00-10:30, coffee break and checking personal email. 10:30-12:00, write intro and begin to flesh out Section 1. 12:00-12:30, lunch.....and so on. It might feel extreme if you're going from no set agenda, but once you get used to working this way, you probably won't have to plan each day as carefully.)

    If you really think through the project and how you need to approach it to complete it, you'll probably feel a lot better and more motivated in your working-from-home situation.

  • i am very cruel to myself when i'm trying to get things done.  i only allow myself to, say, eat lunch (or whatever) once a certain number of things on my to-do list are done.  that way, i don't end up wasting time before lunch, and i have a built-in reward.
  • I agree with Honeydew.  Lists are my favorite thing to make sure I stay focused!!  I love seeing it all crossed off, and knowing that I can move on to the next thing or take a little break to clear my head.  Just think about what you do when you DO stay extremely focused and self-motivated.  Do you need to drink tea, light a candle, listen to music, sit in a room that has zero distractions, or maybe even set a timer?  If it is a project that can be broken down into separate parts of completion, make it a goal to finishe each by a certain time of day.  You might be amazed how things just keep rolling once you get started and feel accomplished! :)

  • I know you say you are working from home, but I find that I work better in some places rather than others, and little things can make a big difference. The library is a good one. The computers are kind of slow for the internet, but when I'm typing up a paper, that works to my advantage.

    I also work better when I use Word, not google docs (better functionality). 

    On a PC, rather than a laptop (they keyboard is better).

    With shorter nails (less typing errors), which allows for a better thought flow.

    Its all these little things that help me to stay focused.
