Help me diagnose the smell in my house.

It smells like dirt.  Literally.  As if there were a huge pile of dirt in my house.

It's not from the rain, because it's been smelling like dirt for a couple weeks - maybe even since late February early March.  It smells the worst in the basement in the laundry room.  DH thinks it's from the drain right outside the basement door - and it could be that because we haven't cleared the leaves from it.  Buuuuuut I think it smells stronger around the water heater/furnace area.  Part of me thinks it could be the furnace - thus blowing stinky dirt smelling air throughout the house.

We changed the filter recently and that didn't smell like dirt, so i'm kind of at a loss.

Is there someone we can call who will tell us where the smell is coming from and what we should do about it?

Not to state the obvious - but have you thought about clearing the leaves and such from the drain and giving it a couple of days to see if the smell disapates (sp?).

Also, is it a wet dirt or a dirt dirt smell?  I know that probably sounds like a stupid question... it has been so wet and humid lately - what about getting a container of those crystals from Home Depot that soak up moisture in the air and see if that gets the smell to go away?

That's the first thing I thought of too.  And the only place I know of where there's been a leak (thus leading to mold) smells like bleach (from when I cleaned the water out of the carpet and underneath it). So i'm not sure if that's it.

Kiahj - We're going to clean the leaves out this weekend and see if that helps.

  • You might have a back-up in your laundry room drain...  is there a drain on the floor in there?  Usually there is one on the floor that's also connected to the laundry sink.
