Ever hiked in HOT weather?

I knew it was going to be hot when DH and I go to Israel in June and I knew we'd be doing a lot of hiking but I didn't put it together until yesterday when I got a group email from one of the guys in charge reminding everyone to make sure they're in good shape to handle long hikes in the heat.

So two questions:

1.  How do you get ready for 90 degrees and high humidity when it's still cool out here?  I'm thinking just making sure I can handle way longer/harder hikes here and I'll be okay there?  I thought about trying to jog in the steam room at the gym but I think they might kick me out.  Wink

2.  What would you pack to wear for hiking?  Whenever I go to humid areas, I'm all about light dresses and skirts because I am not good with humidity.  BUT that's not really good for hiking.  I don't like wearing shorts because I burn really easy but jeans is probably a bad idea.  I usually wear jeans when I hike here but we usually take shaded hikes in the summer so it's not that bad.

Thoughts??

Re: Ever hiked in HOT weather?

  • The only thing I can think of for training would be to go for some long walks with lots of clothes on to really raise your body temp?  Maybe wear a backpack with heavy stuff in it?
  • Work on getting your stamina up.  There's not really much you can do to prepare for the weather.  I would suggest bringing light colored, light yarn fabrics.  Bring lots of sunscreen, and remember to drink lots of water.  If you don't normally wear shorts, maybe white/beige/light tan linen pants would work?  Wearing a light colored head scarf to pull your hair back might be good too.

  • I've played sports in really hot/humid weather...nothing like Israel, but it was hot and humid.  And a tennis court can get pretty hot to where you can feel the heat through your shoes...(really hot)...  You just have to build up your tolerance.  Great idea layering clothes (sweats) and hiking so your body gets used to it.  But make sure you drink plenty of fluids because you are going to sweat like crazy....so start drinking lots of water (if you don't already)....  When in Israel wear light colored clothing, fabric that can breathe easily.  There may be suppliments you can start taking which may help as well....not sure though. • As far as clothing, check out Title Nine (Walnut Creek) or REI. T9 is loaded with really cute stuff for women who ACTUALLY move. Lot's of fluids (can you bring a Camelback?).  Try  some local hikes- Black Diamond in Antioch is a bear on a hot day, but close to home.
  • Try not to wear anything cotton; get as many moisture wicking clothes as you can (they will keep you cool & dry).  Get something like a Buff for your head.  Sunscreen, bug spray.  For pants, I would get something like these.  My H has several pairs & swears by them; plus they also unzip to shorts.  Shirts I would suggest these.  It will really make a difference in keeping your body temp down a lot.

Its hard to "prep" your body for the weather, just make sure to have a LOT of water and make yourself stay hydrated all the time.
