Diapers

We were considering cloth diapering but after thinking about it carefully, we are not going to do it.

So now I need to start buying diapers, lots of them! I heard it's a good idea to stock up. To all moms, any ideas or suggestions about the best way to do this? Online vs. in-store? Target vs. Sams Club? Where to get coupons? Amazon Mom program?

I have no idea where to start. (at least I already bought a diaper bag! ;) )

Re: Diapers

  • Amazon Mom... order the shipping they offer and you get a great deal.  If they were doing Amazon coupons anymore (I heard they stopped), it would have been great to stock up.  I wouldn't buy many though newborn though.  I have a box of newborn and 2 boxes of size 1-2.  Costco diapers are great too.  I also have a box of wipes from Costco.

  • do not stock up.

my ob guestimated that Ava would have been 6lbs and she was nearly 9.5lbs when born - so we never even used newborn size diapers!

some babies have rash reactions to pampers with drymax, and others don't.

each diaper brand will fit your baby a little differently, so I wouldn't want to stock up on one type or have extras of another i won't use....sometimes pampers fit better and sometimes huggies did.

    deals:

sign up for Amazon Mom - it's free. it gets you 15% off diapers and free prime membership for a few months. also choose subscribe and save to get an additional 15% off - so you save 30% and get free shipping. The prime extends thru the site, so any prime itemyou get free shipping on (dh has been shopping for tools and shoes for himself this way). every time you spend $25 int he baby dept, they will add another free month of prime until you accrue one free year.

from time to time, amazon has clipless coupons that will save a few more $s. they may bring back their extra 20%/$10 off codes that were found in magazines for the last few months.

your supermarket may have a baby club on the loyalty card - every $100 you spend on baby products gets you $10 off a future shopping order at ShopRite. If you were to consistently buy diapers or formula, this would be helpful. I'd have to buy a lot of baby food and shampoos and such to reach $100!

BRU has a loyalty program too - use your rewards card - and they track. buy 10 boxes of any one kind and get 1 free. they also have one for formula. BRU often has store coupons off boxes of diapers that an be stacked with manufacturer coupons, and lately i've seen the store coupon to be free bru giftcard when you purchase 2 boxes...

and my best deal to date - using bru giftcards because diapers have been "free!" - so many people gave us giftcards because they knew that there wasn't much needed for a second girl, and they probably felt like they had to give a gift - so i haven't paid for anything at bru in almost 6 months...i even use it to buy ava's fruit pouches for snack :)

  • i'd get one small pack of huggies or pampers newborn and that's it. the hospital will also give you a stack to take home and there will be samples for you in the hospital bag from pampers, huggies, and one of the formula companies...and anyone can stop and pick up what you need.
  • We started out getting diapers at BRU since we were there all of the time and have the RewardRus credit card (something to look in to).  Since we were buying a lot, the $10 rewards vouchers came all of the time and it was well worth getting them there.  Then, as we needed less and less, the savings dwinded and that's when we joined Amazon Mom. What a grat program!  I highly recommend it and hope they bring some coupons back.

  • Have you had a shower yet? I got some size 1 and 2 diapers at my shower. My son was 8.14lbs and the size 1 were too big.  The hospital will most likely give you size 1. We had to go out and buy newborn's after we got home. Having a few packages cant hurt! GL

  • I used to get mine at BJ's until Amazon Mom came around.  They are cheaper than BJ's (even with using all my coupons) so I switched over to them.  You also could do Diapers.com - your first order you get $10 off, the coupon is in all the baby magazines.  Ditto on not stocking up on one particular brand since you don't know which one will work best for baby.  I also wouldn't suggest getting many newborn size diapers.  DS wore them for about 2 weeks and then went right into size 1s (he was 8lbs 4.5 oz at birth).

Even though you decided against cloth diapering did you look into the G diapers?  They're a hybrid of cloth & disposable.  There's also the 7th Generation brand diapers.  I switched over to those about a year ago.  They are completely chlorine free and are much more biodegradable than the standard plastic disposables (if that's one of your concerns).  Amazon mom has them for a good price online.

  • Ladies, thanks for all your replies. We had a busy weekend that's why I didn't reply before.

All your tips make sense, so I won't be stocking up until we know what is the best diaper for our little one. And I see Amazon Mom is probably the best way to go.

@ JennyNel: we did some research but after careful thinking and analizing our lifestyle, we decided it was not the best choice for us. Maybe later when baby is older, will work.

    Thanks again all!
