It was very disturbing and I never want to eat ground beef again.

  • My cousin's daughter (6 years old) was gagging over the ground beef portion and says she's never eating it again.

    I haven't actually watched it yet.  It's in my DVR and I'll probably watch it tonight.

  • Food Inc. made the same statement that ground beef is "washed" with ammonia so DH and I weren't surprised when he brought it up. However, it reminded us that we really want to make an effort to know where our food has been and what has been done to it. I think it's sad that the fast food guy didn't get the point; I know it's all about price to him. But if Chipotle can be popular and use good food then surely there's a way for other kinds of fast food.

  • I only watched part of it, but I saw the amount of sugar that is in flavored milk and almost gagged!  I don't drink flavored milk, but to require kids to have a milk everyday of course they are going to pick something sweeter.

    #1 the ground beef "leftovers" taht are normally sold for animal feed is "cleaned" w/ amonia and then resold as ground beef.

    #2 just the crap that are packaged school foods from central kitchens and this was specifically in LA Unified Schools.  And, the fact that the school board and superintendent completely shut Jamie Oliver down and wouldn't allow him access to any schools.  And, when you see the food they are serving the kids, you realize why they don't want anyone to see.  The school lunch is pizza and french fries, breakfast is a DANISH and chocolate milk.  I didn't see a single piece of fruit or vegetable - or whole wheat bread.  How hard is it to serve a yogurt w/ banana and some toast for breakfast?  Or, some cheerios and cornflakes or raisin bran.

  • yum. yeah I knew it was pretty nasty but I never put too much thought into it since we hardly ever purchase beef in my house.

    I don't want to know the truth about ground turkey. I am holding my fingers in my ears.

    yes - it was sooo bad - I told my hubby I wanted to go straight to the amish market for our next trip . Occasionally we buy at costco as its been conveinet and cheaper. My husband DVR'd it so  he could show parts of it to his health class !!

     

    It really makes you wonder what we really put in our bodies and how much the USDA "protects" us . Yikes

    He didn't really discuss that part.  My take was that the meat processors do it.  Does it make a difference who's adding ammonia to the meat?

    It's an approved process as far as the USDA is concerned, so it's not as though someone's slipping it in.  My guess is it's done at the processing plant, not by the farmers and not specifically in the stores.

    On the show, Jamie recommended that the only way to avoid it was to go to a butcher and have the beef ground in front of you, which is possible, but maybe hard to find in many areas. One could also ask a farmer if they use ammonia/trimmings in their ground beef and hope that they answer honestly.

    Amish markets and organic aren't going to guarantee a better quality product (particularly Amish markets).

    What about kosher meat I wonder? Treuth's in Oella has kosher meat and they will grind the meat for you (and they're a slaughterhouse as well.) Wonder if their meat is okay.........

  • I just wanted to add my BIL is a meat manager at a grocery store. No wonder he always recommended buying a cut and then grinding it yourself.
