WW Q (Not for me!)

So, I know you can lead a horse to water and all that jazz, but I think I might be able to convince my dad to do the new PointsPlus program with WW [since he is convinced that he cannot eat fruits or vegetables and is taking an Atkins-like approach to maintaining his diabetes (completely ignoring the fact that his total triglycerides were over 1k and all his other issues)...and the new PointsPlus has a calculator that takes carbs into account].

I was looking on the WW site, but didn't find much information about doing weight watchers while treating Type 2 Diabetes.  Does any one know or mehbee, if you go to meetings, as a leader?  Please?

Re: WW Q (Not for me!)

  • I work with a woman who is doing the new PointsPlus.  From what she was saying is that is more like an Atkin's diet then any program they have had in the past.  My mom and I were thinking of joining but she cannot do an atkin's diet, and I can't live without carbs.
  • Points Plus is not at all like Atkins. Well, I should say that I don't know much about Atkins, but my understanding is that it Atkins is kind of all or nothing?  Straight up no carbs, correct?

Fruit is "free" on Points Plus. Fruit is frowned on with Atkins, because of the sugar, right? The idea with making fruit "free" is that if I'm hungry, say, after lunch but before dinner, either I need to eat something or dinner is going to be a binge nightmare, right? So, if I were to choose fresh fruit or veggies rather than say, cookies from the vending machine, I could put my hunger aside til dinner, and get some nutrition as well. It makes a lot of sense, and it's also much more manageable, imho.

Really the only thing PP has in common with Atkins is that new calculation figures in protein and carbs. I don't know the math behind it, but it's really common sense. Lean proteins are going to be more points friendly than a loaf of white bread. But that doesn't mean I can't have the white bread if I want it; it just might "cost" more points. KWIM?

The whole idea behind weight watchers is not to cut anything out of your life that you love, and there's nothing in the program that's "one size fits all." You figure out what to reduce, when to indulge, and how to make the program work for you and lose weight/maintain a healthy weight. There's nothing extreme about it.

ETA: Sorry, Amellis, in my rambling I never even answered your question. I know for sure that several people in my meeting are diabetic, but I don't know if it's Type 2 or whatever. I'll ask my leader tonight, so let me know if there's anything else you want me to ask.

Thanks, Kate.  I love WW.  I did it for almost 2 years before I got pregnant, and I cannot wait to start again.  The have my account on freeze, so that I can come back and do the nursing mom's program.  I like that you just learn a healthy life-style change.

Could you also ask if it is still an option to do the old calorie/fat/fiber program or do you HAVE to do pointsplus?  I think that my dad would really benefit from it, but I lost 30lbs on the reg. points program - and I wasn't excercising nearly as much as I should have been.  I am thinking that if I pay for the program for him, he would be more likely to do it.  I don't think he quite understands the carb thing that his RD is trying to explain to him - he is told to not eat carbs, but he can have oatmeal...and EVERYTIME I go to their place, lo and behold there is white bread there.  I keep trying to tell him that there is a difference between complex and simple carbs, but what do I know?  I'm just your daughter.  I think everything I say is immediately discredited because I am vegan.

  • Ok, I was told that WW is highly encouraged while treating type 2 diabetes. So yay! And there is an alternative to the points plus, it's called simply filling, and I imagine that it's just a variation of core. See if he can attend a meeting for free? I'm sure they'll let you tag along given that your status is on hold or whatever. Might look a little funny, but meh, Anyway, they can give your dad the whole instruction lesson after the first meeting or whatever.

And if nothing else, maybe he'll join back up with you when you go back. Better later than never, right?

  • Thanks, Kate.  I will def. suggest it to him.

He doesn't live in Tampa, which I think is the hardest part of encouraging him to do better - currently he lives two hours away.  But I think it would be an awesome thing to do together.  Even if we have to do it online; He doesn't have much support at home and often feels like he is being punished by eating "healthy."
