I just found out that the resort my sister and I are going to at the end of the month will be undergoing renovation while we are there. I got an email from the resort saying that our room (a Junior Suite) is far from the renovation and shouldn't be a problem (this place is huge--almost like Disneyland or Vegas). However, the suites ARE scheduled to undergo renovation over the summer--which means they are probably outdated.
The most recent reviews on Trip Advisor are not glowing--they complain about the unrenovated rooms being old and dated, the lobby outdated, etc. I can't decide what to do. The main draw of this resort is the spa and the views/location (both of which are said to be phenomenal)--not the rooms themselves. However, for what we are paying, I want it to be perfect. (I am actually embarassed to say what we are paying--let's just say it's alot).
Thoughts?
Re: WWYD?
That's tough. When I book a hotel room for a vacation I always check the reviews and if they are bad, I don't ever book the hotel. Lacy does have a point, though. How much time would you spend in your room? But, to me, if I am paying a ton of money to stay there, then I expect to have a nice room. That's just me, though.
Are there any other hotels that are comparable that offer the same amenities? Does that hotel have any suites that are completed? Or even adjoining rooms?
I actually just went through this on my HM. We had an AWFUL hotel at first that almost broke me down into tears when we walked into it. We ended up switching and paying about $20 more a night (to a hotel next door, same views, same beach, much nicer).
I was like Lacy, I thought "well, we won't be spending any time there so oh well about the reviews" and I was very wrong. We weren't comfortable there in the time that we DID spend there, and for what we paid, it wasn't worth it. In the end, I wish that I would have followed the reviews.

Don't get me wrong--the overall reviews on this resort are fantastic. It's just a couple of more recent ones. And they still say the spa and the location is great which is what we are mainly going for.
Our first choice resort was booked on this weekend. It's a popular time to go apparently. Alot of the other hotels and B&Bs that we looked at only offer king rooms and my sister was adamant about having her own bed. I wish I hadn't even told my sister because now I think I'm ok with it and she of course is freaking out!

Hmm....this is a tough one.
I tend to agree with Brianna especially when you are paying the luxury price tag. I would probably call the hotel and inquire about the rooms. If it is a big issue you may be able to get a discounted rate and/or go ahead and book a renovated room (or two that adjoin?) instead.
Have you looked at the AZ Knot or Nest boards? If they happen to be active, I bet someone would know how good/bad it really is.
I second calling and speaking to the resort. Maybe they can reassure you, send pictures, etc. I do look at reviews, but I've also found that competitors go post things on review sites just to detract from them. So I always take it with some skepticism.

No, we did pay for 1 night but we can still cancel up to 3 days before I think. I have emailed the resort to see if I can see a recent photo of both our room and one that has been newly renovated. I really want to stay in a suite though because I don't want to share a sink with my sister for 3 days.
I think we'll stay with it as long as I can get my sister to simmer down. I've been watching our first choice and while things have opened up, they are still only kings. A queen room there would probably be the only way I would switch I think. Thanks everyone.

Ok, so the reservations manager sent me pics of the new rooms and ours. The new rooms have higher end fixtures and flat screens and yeah, they look a little nicer but it's not worth giving up the big bathroom, IMO. Also, I think they are only king beds which is a deal-breaker.
So I think we're fine. I thought that was nice of them to send the pics.
