I just started the C2K program, and I have shin splints already.
any shoe recommendations out there? I have normal arches and as far as I know, I'm not overpronating... is that the right term? I make sure to concentrate on my form when I run (heel, ball, toe) so I don't think that's what's causing my ankle/shin pain.
sooo... help?

Your best best is to go to a running specialty store and get fitted for the right shoe. Any store worth their salt will look at your shoe size, arch, and gait to find the shoe for you. There are a ton of places in the D.C. area (I'm partial to Pacers since they finally pinpointed a problem I'd been having with the shoe I was wearing then). I've never done this, but I think they'll let you try it out for a couple of weeks to see if it's working; if not, back it can go.
I did a lot of guessing when I started running that led to a huge bunch of problems; once fitted with the right shoe, it got much better.
I've heard that shin splints can also be that your calf muscles are growing faster than the fronts, so it throws things off balance. Try stretching, warm and hot compresses, rinse and repeat. Otherwise, I have no idea. I usually get them, too.
I loved the C25K program, and I also am not a distance runner. It was so nice to finally build some stamina. Good luck and try to keep with it. I failed after about 4 weeks I think. Some day I'll start it again.
Ditto this stuff. Getting fitted is probably the best, and safest, bet!
We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?
I agree with Susi, go to a running store (not just a sporting goods store) and get fitted for a shoe. Ask what their return policy is for shoes that aren't the right fit. A lot of stores will allow an exchange after a few days if the shoes aren't right for you.
For years I figured that lower back pain and blisters with new shoes were the norm. Only after actually going to a running store and getting fitted for the right shoe did I realize that is not the case and I stopped beating up my body.
I run in the Brooks Adrenaline and the Brooks Trance (I rotate). The only time I feel pain is when the shoes need to be replaced. I love my Brooks but that is only because they are perfect for my feet and body. Good luck finding the perfect shoe for you!
I've heard both good and bad with the Vibram 5-fingers. Some love them, some say they have gotten injuries since running in them. I think it goes back to each individual runner. They are just like other running shoes and I think that they will work for certain people depending on their body types and how they run.
I would love to try them someday though, I'm very intrigued by them!
She's an awesome email buddy. Highly recommend.
Thanks for all the feedback, ladies! I had a feeling I'd probably end up having to be fitted, so this just confirms it for me. and lucky me, I just found a running specialty store in the town center where Sean & I are having dinner on Saturday night, so I'll be making a visit sooner than expected!
Tobi - I actually did a quick search on Zappos for the highest rated running shoes and came across the Merrills... might have to check them out! I would love an email buddy! I'll send you a PM with my email.
And Angela, according to consumersearch.com, Brooks Adrenaline are number one overall running shoes, so I'll probably be giving those a try as well!
Snoopy - I am not a runner at ALL, so the program is tough for me even though I'm only running for 60 seconds at a time. although I wouldn't run at ALL if I didn't have it, hahaa.
I definitely want something that'll be versatile to treadmill and outdoor running. I figure if I end up liking it, I can switch to running outside when the weather is nice... I'm sure it'll be a lot better than being stuck in the gym on gorgeous days!

Good luck with the shoe search and with the running. Just remember that you have to start somewhere and don't get discouraged. I used to hate running because I wasn't fast and I was always trying to keep up with everyone else. I only really started to love to run when I decided to do it for myself and go at my own pace.
Running is my favorite "me" time, and it can actually be "relaxing". If you saw me in spandex (not pretty at all) and saw the way I run, you would realize that I am absolutely not a natural born runner. But I have learned to love it because I now do it for me and the only person I compete with is myself. Good luck and I really hope you love it!
Ditto getting fitted...and most places fit you for free and the shoes cost the same as decent running shoes you will find at a regular sporting goods store, so it is totally worth it.
Like Angela, I run in Brooks Adrenalines and I love mine...they were the first pair I was fitted for...I just guessed on shoes before that--getting fitted made a HUGE difference.
Also...my biggest advice is GO SLOW! I didn't do the C25K program, but I did start off with walk/run intervals and gradually built up. When I ran my first mile I was SO proud of myself--and I never would have made it that far is DH hadn't told me that I had to slow down so I didn't burn out too fast.

I agree with everyone else about getting fitted. I have found that only New Balance shoes work well for me.
About the foot strike...is heel, midfoot, toe comfortable for you or is that strained? I ask because there is a train of thought that it might be better to strike with midfood. Personally, I've never paid attention to my foot strike, I just do whatever is comfortable for me.
I have suffered with shin splints horribly at various points in my life. Every year in high school I would get shin splints because our very first practice for CC was always 'go run 3km'. Too much, too soon. I got very used to running with pain. When I took up running again after highschool, I tried to start off more slowly. Still ended up with shinsplints so I backed off and tried again.
Good luck!
Ah this post makes me totally miss running!
I'm actually a slight supinator (the opposite of pronation, where I tend to lean on the outside edge of my foot) and I ended up with Mizunos which I love. But totally ditto everyone's recommendation to get fitted, everyone's different!
GL with the C25k program!

hmmm, this is a good point. it's kind of strained for me to strike like that, but my trainer told me it's the "proper" way to strike, even when walking, so I'm always concentrating on making sure that's what I do. if I strike mid-foot, it hurts also though... feels like I'm just jamming everything.
