Per Neuner's request

Discussion:

 Don't let ignorant people vote

What do you think - Should people have to take something like the citizen test before they're allowed to vote?  Does this violate the constitution and encroach on American's right to vote? Would weeding out 'ignorant' voters actually improve our political system?

Re: Per Neuner's request

  • It's kind of an interesting concept.  Will it ever happen, of course not.  But some of the logic behind it is interesting.  It amazes me how mnay people blindly vote for or against things without even basic knowledge of the candidates or issues.

But the definition of "ignorant" is also relative.  I know several people that could pass a citizen's test but are completely ignorant meatheads who have swastika tatoos (former clients, not like my social circle).  Wouldn't prevent ignorant thinking from influencing their votes.

  • I think there needs to be more balance in our society when it comes to race and socioeconomic status before we start restricting people to vote based on a civics test. IMO.

I think ideally it would be great if everyone were more educated when it came to the government, and he brings up great points. (He's kind of cute too. :)

Although, like the literacy tests and the slew of other stupid hoops that people were made to jump through after the 15th Amendment was passed, I don't know how much it would service us to enforce this. It seems like another great idea that would be twisted into some sort of discrimination. (not any certain thing in particular either, could be heritage, sexuality, race, sex, age, class, etc.)

  • Considering how low voter turnout is to begin with (and that more Americans allegedly voted for American Idols than they did in the last elections), I don't see this coming to fruitition.

He has some valid points when you think about it, voters don't always know all the facts or platforms, but I think it's taking it a bit far to instill a test.

This. I think it's a great idea in theory, same as with some type of parenting class or certificate, but there doesn't seem to be a way to really make it work. It would just turn into another type of discrimination or injustice in this country.

  • I'd rather politicians and government officials have to pass more rigorous testing/hurdles in order to be elected Stick out tongue

Though I agree that so many voters are unfortunately uninformed, or ignorant, I think it sort of turns into "only smart people can vote" or "only educated people can vote". Are the illiterateunderprivileged undeserving of a vote? It's a difficult concept...

  • Ya, I'm pretty much in agreement.  There would be no way to keep it non-discriminatory. I think it is kind of unfortunate though, since I do think that uninformed voters are part of the problem in our political system. People that only vote along party lines, or vote for a candiate without knowing what they actually stand for but at least they're Christian, etc. etc.
  • I think way too many people just vote based on party lines or on what their friends, family/other people around them tell them is good/bad. I am an anti-partisan supporter!

I always thought it would be better if elections were done ala The Dating Game - where the voters didn't know who the person was and could only ask them what their position was on certain topics. No discussion of what party they were in or anything else... just Contestant 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and so you go in and just vote for the person that you agree with the most....no media coverage of the campaign - and everything anonymous. It's a nice dream anyway!

I agree with you. Especially about the Christian bit. Most times that is propaganda.

I think it would help if we had some of the same media laws as Canada, that bans lying in news.
