Wardrobe Woes

I'm at that point.  Don't you just hate it when you feel like you need new EVERYTHING???  I feel like I need new jeans, skirts, dresses, short sleeve tops, tanks, casual clothes, work clothes, shoes, swimsuit..... even undies and SOCKS for craps sake.  GUH.

Part (most) of this has to do with body conciousness and weight gain over the years, banishing old favorites to the "skinny" pile.  Add to that a job that requires a certain dress-to-impress ability, and voila - daily fashion crisis.

How do you guys deal?  Small updates, a little at a time?  Giant shopping sprees?  Trading with girlfriends?  I'm so frustrated!

Re: Wardrobe Woes

  • I'm still hoping to get back into my skinnier clothes and I don't want to spend alot of money on a temporary (I hope) wardrobe so I do small updates, a little at a time.  To get the most bang for my dollars, I'll shop the clearance section, TJ Maxx, Marshalls, outlet malls, thrift stores, and consignment stores.  I'll also try to combine a coupon with a sale or clearance item.
  • I quit ignoring my friend Melinda's email and the magic clothes fairy delivers whatever I want.

  • Yes, I feel like this right now!  I think it partially has to do with the weather getting nicer and the fact that I was pregnant last year at this time.... all my clothes feel old.

Anyways, I am interested to see what other people have to say, because I don't have the answer!  I just need a money tree so we can all go on sprees...

  • Yes, I know exactly how you feel. I usually get a bug this time of year to shop with the weather changing. I usually purge old clothes in the spring and go on a couple separate shopping trips. I never buy at full price and usually have a coupon or discount of some sort. I usually buy work clothes at Kohls since they always have good deals.

  • I make a priority list. The items that absolutely need to be replaced with good quality essentials first (like suits, trousers skirts).I try and do those twice a year and maybe about 2-3 items each time. Then I pick away at the trendier items like tops at less expensive places along the way. Macy's is always having sales, wait for one. Or hit the clearance sections online on a regular basis. I love Anthropologie, but won't pay full price so I shop online markdowns constantly.

I think it's a great idea if you have girlfriends aroudn your size to swap with. Though I've given a lot away, I don't tend to come back with much that I would necessarily buy on my own. Ask for essentials like socks and undies for xmas or birthday. For some reason my MIL loves to buy these things.

  • I often shop at "Mom's Closet."  My mom recently retired from a job where she wore business casual a lot.  Since she loves to buy clothes but frequently gets bored with them, and we're the same size in tops, I get a lot of hand-me-downs.  It's great for filling out my wardrobe.  I'm not a big shopper, so I tend go in mini-spirts where I'll spend maybe $200 to get a couple of pairs of pants and some tops at the same time.

This, but I still have no where to go but school and work.  I buy a couple things, leave the tags on and see if I like them in a week - I have no qualms about returning things.  I love the idea of making a list like a PP mentioned; it would save me tons of frustration when all of a sudden I hate everything.

And again, we live in MN where it was 70 out two days ago and now I'm back in my furry boots and a sweater.

  • I'm running into this right now. I think it's because it's warming up outside.  In the winter, I don't care as much if a sweater is a little baggy or doesn't fit perfectly.  But spring/summer clothes are lighter and look worse if they're ill-fitting.

This past weekend, I grabbed a few new lightweight cardigans that I can wear with all of my cute tank tops (while making them work-appropriate.)

Sometimes I just pick up a new necklace to wear with my clothes; it helps me feel like my clothes aren't as boring anymore.

  • Just this morning I was truly feeling like I had nothing to wear! I feel like everything is blah, and I suppose the chilly weather this morning doesn't help. I always shop rather piecemeal - just trying to keep a feel on what I need and picking up items when there is a sale. But, if you really need a lot of items for your job, I agree with the suggestion to make a list and prioritize it. Then maybe set a budget and try to get a bunch of things from the top of your list. Then, you can add some more items later as you find them.

It seems like my biggest problem is that I can never find what I'm looking for when I need it, but I always seem to find cute things at random times when I'm looking for something else. So, I guess the moral is if you find a great piece that you know you'll use eventually, pick it up in case you can't find it later!

  • I never go on big shopping sprees, I feel too guilty doing that for some reason. With that being said I shop at Marshall's and I get a lot of dresses from Target (they have had some really cute ones the last 2 couple of years). I will also wait until I have a coupon from Macy's and shop there, you can get some really good deals if stuff is on sale and you have a coupon. I hope you have some luck finding some new clothes, there is nothing that brings you down more than when you feel like you don't look good in the clothes that you have.

  • I at least browse stores pretty regularly. When there's a good sale going on for something that I need, I'll buy a few pieces. I'm a pretty good shopper, but I'm usually too lazy to really dig through racks at places like Marshall's. New York & Company is awesome though; they have great in-store sales pretty regularly, including an everything-in-the-store-is-50%-off sale at least a couple times a year. Plus you can combine them with their email list coupons, too.

When I'm in the mood to spend a good chunk of time digging, I'll go to thrift stores.

  • i go through this every spring. i actually don't even really HAVE a "summer" wardrobe. i think since it's such a short season, i have trouble justifying the spend in my mind.

that said, i'm trying to pick out things now that i can wear a longsleeve underneath with to make it work in the cold months too.

bottom line, i just don't spend enough on clothes and my clothes are BORING. i'm just a terrible shopper.

  • Incidently, my hubby asked me a week or two ago how much money I'd need to do a really good shopping spree (I may have been complaining about my lack of pretty summer clothes).  I think it was idol curiosity, but a girl can always hope that pre-funded shopping spree is heading her way.  Can't she?!?!
