Another poll: What do you consider "walking distance

to downtown?" I was perusing MLS for a friend and it seems like the realtors are sort of liberal with what is considered "walking distance to downtown."

Re: Another poll: What do you consider "walking distance

  • To me "walking distance" is a no more than a 1/2 mile.
  • 1 mile is what I'd consider ok for that term, but I'd be fine with 1-2 miles from a downtown.
  • I think for me, it's probably whatever I can get to in 10-15 minutes, regardless of distance because a 1/2 mile up a steep hill is different than flat walking  ;)  Also depends how pedestrian-friendly the walk is. Some areas are better about keeping up sidewalks than others.

    I agree.

  • We are 1 mile from dowtown (Campbell)  and we have walked/ridden our bikes there a few times but it always seems like sort of a production. Maybe it's because the kids on their bikes make me nervous but it seems like a 1/2 mile too far to do regularly.
  • I'd also say about a 1/2 mile.  I think the 10-15 minute guideline is pretty good too, though I veer more towards 10, especially since I'm a "Boston walker" (I walk really fast).
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

I agree, though if it's pedestrian friendly I think up to a mile is ok for the term if we're talking real estate.

  • We are 0.8 miles from our downtown but to get there you have to take ridiculously hilly pretty residential streets *or* walk down a super steep hill then on a busy street I'm not a big fan of. It just seems too long and not worth the trouble. When we moved in I considered it walking distance. We've walked maybe 3 times in 2 years.

Now, I'd consider 0.5 miles or a flat 0.8 walking distance.

This. I might make it 15-20 mins. But the terrain is important esp if DH is with me. And sometimes those guides don't pay attention to areas that are not pedestrian friendly (like there's a freeway running through part of it and nowhere to walk).
  • I would consider one mile to be walking distance.

  • It is exactly one mile from my driveway to "Downtown" (willow glen) and I walk it at least once a week. In fact, when the "good" park isn't under construction (like all last summer) we walked there, picked up lunch, stopped at the library, walked to the park, spent some time, and walked home. The straight walk home is 1.5 miles from the park (intersection to door, according to google maps) and the meandering to get there is 3.5ish.

It's a very pedestrian friendly stroll and on pleasant weather days it's delightful.

(even better - it's .25 miles from our driveway to the doors of the new Fresh and Easy...)

  • I'd say about 1/2 mile is acceptable walking distance.  I used to walk about that to downtown Willow Glen and a round trip was about a mile.
