prenatal massages?

I don't really know what the difference is between a regular one and a prenatal. Anyone care to elaborate? Also, any places you'd recommend? My birthday is coming up and I think that's what I'll mention to DH if he asks what I want, which he always does. Not so creative, but super thoughtful :)

My sister and I went for manicures last week, and just the 5 minute hand massage had me wanting to throw down on a table and get a full body massage.

Re: prenatal massages?

  • The difference is that the therapist avoids certain areas of the body that can induce labor or cause harm.  They also position you differently to ensure you are safe and comfortable.  The cost should be about the same, but they need to know if it is prenatal so they can be prepared with extra pillows, game plan, etc.  :)

  • I was wondering if they had a table with a hole cut out in the middle for my belly.. lol.

  • My understanding is you get the bed with the hole where your stomach goes so you can lay on your stomach comfortably (a godsend when you can't anymore) and they like to know for liability reasons.  I believe they won't do deep tissue and the concentrate or not concentrate on certain areas of your body due to pregnancy.

I went to Bartram Walk Spa when I was pg.  They have deals every week girls' night Tuesday I think.  PV Inn and Spa is nice too but I'd wait to go there until you can enjoy their other amenities too like the hottub and sauna/steam room.

ETA: It's more of a pillow set up over the bed that leaves room for your stomach between the pillows and the bed itself.

  • Some places do and some have a table-topper that is foam and accommodates for the belly.  Most just use extra pillows to make a fluffy cocoon around you while you lay on your side.

  • A few of my friends have gone to Natural Spa (?) at the Town Center.

  • I think they do them at A Stork's View in Mandarin, as well as Anthony and Sandra.  I believe that Massage Heights at the Town Center offers them too.

  • I went to Massage Envy several times for prenatals. They lay you on your side and give you a body pillow to snuggle up to and support your belly, and you tell them what level of pressure you feel comfortable with. There are really no reliable pressure points to avoid when you're pregnant; they've now studied that and it's mostly just accupressure tradition rather than fact.

I found prenatals very helpful because I rarely slept well and everything ached, although it changed depending on what I threw out that week :)
