Did anyone watch Jamie Oliver's?

Food Revolution last night.  His new season (8 episodes) started last night, and he's doing the Los Angeles school district.

I learn so much from him, and mine and my parents diets have changed because of him.  From the first season, we no longer eat any "pressed" chicken.  And now seeing and hearing about the "pink sludge" -disgusting.

Did you watch, what did you think?

Re: Did anyone watch Jamie Oliver's?

  •  I watched all last season, and last night I watched some of the episode---and fell asleep about halfway through. I agree with his philosophy in general, and try to cook with a lot of fresh ingredients as much as I can, and as much as our wallets can afford. However, when he tried to make a milkshake without ice cream, I was a bit disturbed. He was calling a smoothie a milkshake, when there is a clear difference.

  • I watched. I love him and his show.  I gave up pressed chicken after last season and almost all beef after seeing food inc.

what is fed to kids at school pisses me off to no end. It ALMOST makes me want to homeschool, seriously...

They've started this crap around here where you need a docs note to bring your lunch to school...hope that goes out the window before my kids get to school b/c they will not be eating the crap they serve.

a doctor's note? what on earth? what grounds do they have to force your child to eat what they're serving?

i watched last season and really liked it. I'm glad you told us about it. I don't see commercials, so I had no idea he was doing another season. I'll have to watch on hulu tonight :)

Before I read your last paragraph, I said to myself,"when I was a kid, my Mom packed our lunch every day bc one it was cheaper and two she knew what we would be eating."

It is unbelievable to me that they are making kids bring a docs note to bring a packed lunch.  I have never heard of that!!!  I wonder if the reasoning behind that is food allergies.

I cant bring myself to watch Food inc yet, Im too scared.  Im already super picky about my food, and I know I would go into full fledged vegan after seeing it.  I would love to buy all organic, local meats but it's not in our budget.  Im scared to even think about buying ground sirloin at the grocery anymore.

  • It's not in all schools, but some want a docs note. So that sends parents running to the docs for a note that says their kid has a milk allergy or something even if they don't. Vivi really does have a milk allergy, so I won't have to worry for her. ;)

It's the kids who have parents who don't care that really brakes my heart. Sometimes school food is the only food they get...and it's JUNK! they may as well give them Coke and cake...

Kellie, do you have a local grocery store that grinds their own meat? we're lucky that we have an awesome locally own grocery chain here that cuts and grinds all their own meat. You can buy off the shelf, but you can also get them to cut or grind it right there for you while you wait and you can see what they do. I can't bring myself to eat any beef that I'm not sure comes from 1 cow anymore. :/

All of the larger grocery stores here already have it ground prepackaged or in the case.

There is one local "food mart" that I have gotten them to ground up some ground sirloin for me fresh...but they did it in the back and when I cooked it at home it wasnt so great.

Im definitely going to have to dig deeper and find somewhere locally that will ground it fresh in front of me, because I cant live without eating a burger, meatballs or a taco salad!  LOL :D

  • He drives me insane.

My biggest peeve is that if parents have an issue with what the schools  (read: my tax dollars) are feeding their kids, they should send their lunch with them. If they "can't afford" it, not my problem. I know that sounds cruel, but really - first I have to feed my own kids, then I'll worry about everyone else's. I know WAY too many people working the system and getting free lunch for their kids at school when their fridge at home is exploding with name brand foods and expensive meats thanks to my tax dollars. I'm not exaggerating either. I've seen it with my own eyes.

Two, I don't want to pay more taxes so everyone else's kids can eat healthier when I'm spending all I can to make sure what my kids eat at home is healthy. More taxes out of my pocket will mean less healthy stuff on my table.  It's not the schools' responsibility to feed those kids. They do it as a service to the community, or at least that's why it started. Now the government has turned it into a money-grabbing free for all.

Three, all these new food regulations at school make me livid. It's not the government's business what I feed my kid. If I want to send them with a coke and a snickers everyday for lunch, that's my family's decision. I wouldn't do that, but it's the point of it.  It's not their place to tell me I can't send peanut butter and jelly or that I have to send a meat in their meal. (One area school here takes their lunch away and gives them a school lunch if it doesn't include meat.) Not all meat is freakin' bad! In fact, most of it is good as long as you aren't eating it in excess.)
