Hello ![]()
I'm new to "the nest"..I was previously on "the knot" boards. My husband and I just got married less than a week ago! It's still really exciting and new to call him my husband! I was hoping you all would be able to help us out maybe..
Currently we live about an hour south of Houston. We are seriously thinking of moving to Austin soon. We've wanted to for awhile now, and now that we're married it seems like the perfect next step.
What kind of advise would you give us? What areas are good to live in? Are jobs easy to find? I'm 20 and he is 19. We've both always lived in a small town (Lake Jackson area if you're familiar). We are young but love to party.
Any comments would help. I'm so excited! Thank you
Re: Hello Austin ladies!
First off, Congratulations!! :]
I'm probably not the best person to be giving advice about Austin, considering my husband and I just moved here 2 weeks ago! One thing I would suggest, assuming you'll be living in an apartment off the bat, is use an apartment locator!! I spent SO much time online and on the phone gathering information, and then we met up with a locator, and within an hour, he had found us the perfect place! They're free to you since they get paid through the complex if they rent out, so it's definitely helpful! If you want the contact info of the guy we used, let me know!
We live in NW Austin, and I really like it. We found a great place, and it's nice because it's kind of away from the craziness of downtown and people, but isn't far if we want to go down there. As I've found, location is totally opinion. From what I can see many people recommend NW, South, and West (not usually East). But if you know where you're going to be working, you'd probably want to live as close as possible to avoid traffic, if you can.
Good luck!!
Edit: As far as jobs, as I understand it's not too difficult to find work. There's always something available. I'm not sure what kind of work you're looking for, but even if you don't find what you want right away, I wouldn't expect too much trouble finding something to pay the bills until you did.
Hello and welcome!
I think Austin is so much fun. You should definitely some spend some time here before deciding to move. That will help you determine which area you'd like to live in. If I were in your shoes (and this is just me, I have no idea how you guys are) and if money were no object, I would want to live on South Congress, the Domain, the Triangle or in a loft downtown. I really wish that at some point I would have lived in a place that was within walking distance of the cool things that I like to do. However, I've always chosen to spend my rent money on a bigger place rather than a good location.
As for the jobs, I know pp said that they're easy to come by. I'm not sure about that. I have many friends who've been laid off and have had a hard time finding one. Granted, they may be looking for something specific. I don't know. Another thing to consider in that area, is that a ton of teachers were just laid off so there will probably be more competition than in the past. I'm not trying to scare, just to let you know. I'm sure you could find one, I just wouldn't recommend moving here without something lined up.
Good luck in your new marriage and we're happy to have someone new.
How much time have you spent in Austin? I would recommend spending a lot of weekends here to get a feel for the different parts of town before you move. That would make it a lot easier?
What field of work are you and your husband in? I think that will have an impact on how easily you'll find work. I would recommend at least one of you having a job before you move, that will take off a lot of the pressure.
thank you!
I have spent a good amount of time up there. I love it there. The last few times my husband and I have gone up there, it just feels so right. I guess what I was trying to find out was what opinions do you have about different areas there. Are there parts you feel safer in? As a young women, should I worry when I go out?
Ditto this. Many fields are pretty competitive since everyone and their grandmother wants to live in Austin these days. If you're flexible though, I'm sure you'll have an easier time.
