Another Gardening Q - trimming dead flowers

Apparently, it's gardening day here on the DC nest. . .

When we got here, the rhododendron and tulips in our yard were blooming, then sadly we had a cold day with snow and hail.

Pretty much all the petals fell off the tulips and now they're just stems. I assume I should trim those down, how far should I do it?

Most of the flowers on the rhododendron fell off, and those that didn't turned brown. Should I just pull off those petals?

Re: Another Gardening Q - trimming dead flowers

  • You can pull off the rhodie petals if you feel so inclined but it's not going to encourage more blooming.  Typically, they have one big push & that's it for the year.

As far as the tulips go, you can trim the stem but NOT THE LEAVES.  The leaves need to remain intack so they can store energy for next year.  They will eventually yellow & brown & you can remove them then.

  • Thanks! I wasn't sure if the rhododendron would bloom again or not. I figured not, but I will probably pull of the the petals b/c they look ugly. I am so sad it was destroyed by the weather because it's one of my favorite plants and I was really happy when I saw it in the yard!

Thank you so much for telling me about the tulip leaves! I definitely did not know that. The stems look silly sticking up with no bloom so I will trim them off and leave the petals until they brown.
