Fellow TX Teachers

I'm usually the last to know anything, and I just learned about this today.  But just in case you are like me and haven't heard, then you might want to know about the security breach of TRS.  Names, addresses, SSN's, driver's license #'s, etc. were stolen.  You can call a toll free number to find out if your information has been compromised:

ETA:  I called.  Mine's been compromised, and so has DH's.  UGH

  • I know several people who work for the state, and totally agree:  the situation sucks!

Y'all may know this already, but you can get a free credit report from Annual Credit Report.  (You can actually get 3 free per year, if you select a different credit reporting agency each time.) It's probably a good idea to go ahead and check to make sure there isn't anything suspicious on your report.

Also, you can put a fraud alert on your credit report through any of the 3 credit reporting agencies.  (You only have to contact one, and they'll share info with the others.)  I think those last 90 days, but I've had to use it before and it gave me peace of mind.

  • I may be entertaining too much optimism here, but from what I had read, it sounded like the information was exposed by being placed on a public server but was not necessarily found or stolen by someone. Someone with the state realized the information was exposed and sounded the alarm. Of course, they can't tell if someone bad DID get it, so...yeah. :(

They actually discovered this the day after I started my job with the state, so I'm wondering if my info is out there, too. Hrmph.

  • Mine was compromised as well... but under my maiden name, not my current married name??

The information was "out there" from January until March when it was discovered.  I can't imagine someone not copy and pasting that somewhere.  Not only that... when something is on the internet it can circulate for years before/if it ever goes away.  Not cool.

  • Mine is under my maiden name, as well. So I'm not sure if it was stored info from when I worked for the state years ago, or a result of their incompetence getting my name right this time around (the OAG and Comptroller had me listed by different names; government competence at its finest).  I need to pull a credit check to  make sure all is well, but I can't remember which of the reporting bureaus I've already gotten my free reports from in the last year.

  • My H work for the state and just got a letter saying his was on that list. Thanks for the tip about a fraud alert. We'll have to do that for him. He did just apply for a car loan and got approved so I'm hoping that means his credit is ok and none of his info has been used.
