Pooks reminded me...

My ILs are mad at me for picking my sister and BIL to be Xander's gruadian if anything was to happen to Andrew and I. We picked them for a few reasons, but the two most important are: our neice is only 13 months older than him, and if we didn't have a second he would have a sister, and two they can financially afford to raise a second child.

Re: Pooks reminded me...

  • Let me guess, they want to be the guardians?
  • I'm sure they do. Their issue is they don't understand why we didn't pick either of the brothers or Andrew's sister and BIL.

Here's the thing about the siblings:

SIL and BIL are expecting #2 this August, and couldn't afford to take on another child.

BIL#1 is in the Army, sorry I'm not leaving my child with a person who could be deployed for a year or more.

BIL#2 is 23 and has no job.

I just don't get why ILs need to fight about the choices we make for our kids.

  • hands down my DH would want to pick his parents, but personaly I don't want to have any one from our family raise him because I dont want them to think "well they didnt pick us" so I would want his godparents to raise him.

  • It's a tough situation, definitely. Jacob isn't going to be baptised, so we put off the guardian decision (bad, I know!) -- but it's hard to choose when Thom's brother has 3 children they're good parents, and my sister has 2 children and they're good parents. We have life insurance so we don't have to make the decision based on money, but both families would provide more financial stability than Thom and I would anyway. That brings us to consider friends instead. But why consider friends when the only issue is that we can't choose between two good families??! Makes me want to pull my hair out.

And if someone second-guessed our decision (once we make it! lol!) then that would send me over the edge. It's your baby -- it's not like you didn't think about your decision!

  • Rebek, we haven't had Xander baptized yet. Mainly because I haven't found a new church that I like. My sister and BIL were already asked to be his godparents as well.

  • Playing devil's advocate - they're probably worried that they won't get to see Xander very often or something. Still, they shouldn't be mad at you.

Jordan would stay with my cousin. I have a crazy half brother and Scott's brother doesn't have any kids. Plus, Scott's not his biological father so that might not fly anyways. I wouldn't want him living with grandparents. I spent a lot of time living with mine when I was young. It's not the same as being in a home with a young family.

Yes, allowing your child religious freedom makes you totally sucky. Jordan was never baptized either. Scott and I just came to agreed that my cousin will take Jordan if something happens.

We also plan on letting Xander decide on religion as well. I am a believer, and Andrew is an Atheists.  Andrew did agree to let Xander be baptized, but he would be much happier if we didn't do it.

  • Jess I was baptized twice lol. Once as a baby and then I chose to be baptized as an adult. It is a very personal decision for us. We do have baby dedications where we as parents commit to raising our child in a Christian home, but in the end it is the child's decision to be a Christian or not. (not to knock any one else, this is just what we believe).

As for us I have no freaking clue who we would leave LO too. I suspect Nick's parents because they are fairly young and we know that LO would for the most part be raised with the same morals that we would want to raise LO. I just found out a little bit ago that I am to get my niece and nephew should anything happen. 1 because BIL's brother has a gun in their house and my Sis and BIL are not a fan, 2 because BIL's brother and wife are barely home with the one kid they do have, 3 my brother is barely capable of taking care of himself/ is mentally unstable, 4 my sister said she felt that I was most like her in my values etc.
