Funny Story in Play Form

Something kind of funny happened to me when my dog and I returned from our walk.  Let me preface with with the fact that DH and I don't know many of our neighbors well for various reasons, one of them being that when we moved into our house it was sort of past "outside" season-- you know, that time of year when you see everybody outside in their yards so it's super easy to meet people?  Anyway, to my story.  It went a little something like this:

[Enter dog and master.  Zeke and I walk to mailbox across from house.  Elderly woman from across the street spots us, and I know that we will have to introduce ourselves to her.] "Hi, I'm Alex.  I live across the street with my husband, Bobby."

Woman: "What a beautiful dog.  He's just precious.  Absolutely adorable."  [Zeke wags tail happily, clearly eating up being the center of attention.] "I've seen him outside so much and think that he's just darling." [Woman pets Zeke, who, by this point in time, is showing his belly for a rub.]

Me: "Thanks."

[The woman and I make small talk, mostly about dogs.  I try to hint at leaving several times, only to be roped back into the conversation.  Finally, I see an out.]

Woman: "Yeah, the neighbor behind me has one of those... those mean dogs.  A, uh, a pit bull, I think." [She nods slowly, trying to decide if this is indeed the breed of dog.] "Yeah, a pit bull.  He's a pit bull."

[I, having met the pit bull in question, know that he is not the least bit mean, and decide that now is the time to walk away.] Me: "I see.  Well, I've got to go light the grill.  It was nice to meet you." [I drag Zeke, who is still getting loved up by the woman, into the house, collapse on the stairwell and bust out laughing.]

Zeke is a pit bull!  Pure blooded pit bull.  Little did my neighbor know, but she was petting "one of those mean dogs" for the past 10 minutes!  It makes me so mad that people stereotype pit bulls, when half the time, they don't even know what they look like or never even interacted with one.

Re: Funny Story in Play Form

  • I am amazed at how naive people are about pit bulls.  If DH and I didn't live in an apartment that doesn't allow them we would have one in a heart beat!  It is so sad that they are stereotyped into being "bad dogs" and then are not provided with the right amount of love.  My DH's old boss actually used to breed award winning pit bulls and I was AMAZED at how smart and loyal his dogs were.  He didn't even have to say anything to them, just would make hand gestures, and they knew exactly what to do.  And not to mention they are just so darn cute!!!  I would have loved to see that lady's face had you said "Oh Zeke here is actually 100% pit bull" hahaha!!!

  • hinmighty: Yay, I'm so glad that you're a pit bull supporter!  Zeke's a rescue, and it is so obvious how grateful he is to have a family and a home to call him own after the rough start to life he had.  He's so incredibly loyal and sweet, and I'm pretty sure that he thinks he weighs about 10 pounds, not 60, because he's always on my lap.  I honestly don't think that DH and I will ever get a different kind of dog after Zeke because he's so amazing!

It makes me so mad that people have these negative views of pits when they've tested higher than even golden retrievers on some temperament tests.  Sure, the media is partially to blame, but you can train any breed of dog to become vicious; you just don't usually hear of the little dogs that attack people.

  • lol people do not realize what the helll they are saying sometimes!  Wowsers.  FYI Zeke looks so flippin cuddly in your siggy, and I too feel like pit bulls get a bad rap. I truly believe that it's like anything: You are a product of your environment and how you were raised, whether you take the good or the bad from that environment is up to you, and doggies are no exception.

Awww I so wish you could've called her out on her ignorance! haha

Aw, thanks!  Zeke is sometimes too cuddly, as in he thinks he's a lap dog.  Haha.  And I 100% agree with you.  I probably would've called her out, had it not been the first time I met the woman.  I don't want to become known as the neighborhood b****.

  • Funny...Looking at Zeke asleep with the duck that is identical to what our Ozzy sleeps with, I am not surprised that this woman got deceived... I am sure when awake, Zeke can do things like: lick you to death or cute-eye stare you down till your heart breaks

He is so cute, I am surprised you get anything done, because I would just hug him all day long.

Aw, thank you! He is sweet and way too adorable at times.  For instance, this morning, he jumped into bed with DH and I and proceeded to army crawl his way from the bottom of our bed all the way up to our pillows.  He nestled in right between us long ways and fell back asleep with his head on my pillow.  He knows he's too cute for us to say no!
