Crown molding anyone?

For those that have crown molding, where do you have it?

Do you think its weird to only do it in the bedrooms? or specific rooms?

I have odd angles and lower ceilings in parts of my hallway, so I'm thinking of only doing it int the bedrooms upstairs. Would you do all rooms or just the master?

Re: Crown molding anyone?

  • My parents only have crown molding in their formal living room and master bedroom and it doesn't look weird. That's where their highest ceilings are so it looks nice.

We have it throughout our house but that's what my grandparents did. If I had the choice, I would either get rid of it or put up a smaller crown molding because we have your standard 8 ft. ceiling and it makes the ceiling look lower.

  • I think it's fine to only have it in some rooms and not others.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • My mom only has it in her master suite and it's fine.  Her hallway is lower so I wouldn't do it there but the bedroom sort of stands alone.  I don't think you need to do all the bedrooms.
  • We only have it in the living room, and I want to add it to the master.  I think it's fine to only have it in certain rooms.

  • You can do it wherever you want, but you are right to think about ceiling heights and consistancy.

I most commonly see it in common rooms....living, dining, great rooms, etc. Sometimes bedrooms, but not as often, unless the whole house is done.

Just think about it as if you were walking through an open house and critiquing where they placed it. That'll answer what your taste and functionality are.

The only house my family ever had it in had it only in the common rooms: living, dining, and kitchen. I'd also think about the room sizes and shapes. We had some very small, strangely shaped rooms (a breakfast nook and what we used as a den) that would have looked strange with crown molding I think. They also had lower ceilings. Our bedrooms were actually larger and were square with higher ceilings so it wouldn't have looked bad in there I don't think.
  • Thanks everyone! I think I have a better idea of what I should do now.
  • Let me guess. You got the wallpaper down and you painted already, right? How's it going?

The wall paper is down, walls smoothed out, and I think I have a paint color picked. However, if we are going to do crown molding in there.. we do that before painting. We are going to have a contractor do it because he is also installing a french door for us. I did paint our master a couple weekends ago. I like to have many projects going on at once ;)

    How are your projects?

  • I painted... except my gray paint looks purple. Tongue Tied It sucks because my whole room was planned around gray paint. I'm going to unpack that room anyway because I can't stand it anymore. I may have to repaint though.

  • I think you can put it anywhere you want it.

Our master has it and our kitchen. Our kitchen looks awesome with it because it finishes off the cabinets. And it makes our master look cohesive with as large as it is.

    That sucks. I'd repaint it!

  • DH wants to do the whole house. I compromised and said only the rooms that are completed so far So, we are doing our great room, dining room, entry hallway and master bedroom at this point. I think only doing a few rooms is fine.
