Teachers, a question

I've been on maternity leave since the beginning of the 3rd trimester. I go back next week and will finish the year.  In looking at my online gradebook for the trimester so far, my grades are massively inflated.  My sub is following my lesson plans and rubrics, but she's grading far easier and more leniently than I would.  I don't think there's anything to be done but I wanted to get some opinions. How would you handle this?
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • I don't think there's really anything you can do about this.  You can't go in and retroactively change the grades because you have a hunch they are inflated, KWIM?  It is what it is.

  • You can't change what has been done while you were on leave.  Although you suspect grades are inflated, most likely there will be little or nothing to prove this.  If it were me, I would go in and start classes out by reminding them of your expectations.  Make sure you are clear.  But walk that fine line of not returning and showing the students you are upset by this.  You do not want to punish your students for a sub's possible mistake.

Ditto the above.  I've had similar issues both times I've been out on maternity leave, but ultimately I figure that the pendulum swings back far enough when I return to make up for the artificially high grades earlier in the year.

  • Unfortunately, you can't do anything about it because you were not the teacher at the time.  When you go back, you can set your own expectations and just go from there.

I'm so thankful that my maternity leave fell perfectly in our trimesters at school.  I was out for the 2nd trimester of the year.  All of the classes were completely run by the sub.  I came back at the start of the 3rd trimester and went on my merry way with brand new classes.

  • Oh I had this problem too. The day I came back after having my leave (which wasn't long since DS was in the NICU), I talked to my students. I had seen some of the work they had done and obviously the sub graded on completion and not correctness on many of the assignments I specified needed to be graded for correctness. I mean, some of that stuff actually IS on the final haha. I was completely straight up with them.
I said "Alright guys...we need to have a talk. You know I've been checking my grade book online and I know your grades are..well..above what they have been. You need to know this stuff and it's going to be on the final. BSing your way through an assignment to get an A isn't going to cut it anymore. Capishe?"
The grades can balance themselves out...I know mine did eventually.
