Question - Preping my garden area?

I'm trying to work the fence line to create a vegetable garden. The problem Is that there is 2-4" of dirt and 'decorative yard rock' then there is an old weed barrier. I'm trying to dig down past the weed sheet and tear all that up to rotatile it for the garden. IS there something I can use to get under that weed liner any easier?

I'm using a shovel to try and get down underneath it. but its really heavy and hard for me to work it all the way across. The weed barrier is stuck underneath the neighbors fence line so its not coming up, and its tearing when i try to pull it up.

I was using a flat shovel that i thought would work to dig along the dirt under the lining, but its not working.

The stuff on top of the lining is this weird cemented mixture of garden rock, dried mud, and weeds. Am I just going to have to man up and work through it inch by inch? or is there something I can use to break it up to make it easier to shovel out?

Re: Question - Preping my garden area?

  • Sorry if thats a little confusing.

    I'm just frustrated by it.

Could it help to 'water it to kind of loosen up the mud? or would that just make a mess of it all and make me more frustrated?

  • Too much water will make it a muddy mess but a little bit of water might help loosen it.  It sounds to me like you are just going to have to dig through it layer by layer removing all the layers.  Preparing a garden is hard work.

  • Try to spray the weeds first with a weed killer.  It should kill/loosen up the roots to make a little easier to dig up.
