Oh no, oil on the driveway

Long story short, there's some oil spots on our driveway.  I hosed it, used a scrub brush with Dawn, it's still there, barely faded.  Anyone know how to get rid of it.  DH is especially anal about oil spots (as am I but not as extreme).  TIA.

Re: Oh no, oil on the driveway

  • Home Depot sells a product specifically for removing oil stains from the driveway.  If you follow the directions exactly it will remove most of the stain.
  • Sounds weird, but cat litter does the trick. Something about the cat litter "pulls" the stain out of the concrete. Works everytime. I grew up with kitty litter in my driveway all the time Embarrassed

This! My grandmother told me this when my truck leaked oil all over her driveway.

  • You can use the non-clumping cat litter, it's basically dried clay. My dad buys it for his garage and if you buy it at an auto store it's called Speedy Dry. My dad puts a generous amount on the area then sweeps it up a few hours later. It's worked every time. Also works for antifreeze and ATF stains too!
  • Thats great to know, thanks!

  • Cat litter for sure! put some over the spot and then step on it and "scrub" with your foot. It will be off in a few minutes!
  • Sprinkle some powdered laundry detergent (we found that Tide works best--we never tried the liquid detergent, but I bet it works too) and get it a little bit wet.  Use a stiff broom to swish it around.  Rinse.  Always removes the stain and it's something that most people have at home!

But then you're washing the oil *and* the detergent into the storm drains.  Soaking it up with kitty litter, sweeping it up and sending it to the landfill is better.
