Can I get a car?

This summer I am looking to possibly get a new car. I am looking at a Kia Sportage or Sorento. They range from $13,000-$18,000 for the ones I have been pricing...obviously it will be a used one. I have $5000 to put down and a good credit score (lower/mid 700s)

Here's the catch, I am a substitute teacher. Therefore it is not a "steady" job. I pay all my bills and have a strict budget which would allow me to pay for a car payment each month. Is there no way anyone will give me a car loan though because I am not a full time employee at a school?

Re: Can I get a car?

  • I am not sure to be honest. I have a full time job (the same one for 3 years), 2000 to put down, no debt...yet no credit history and I can't get one. Well, I was approved once @ 28% interest and told them thanks but no thanks. The vehicle I was looking at was pre-owned and was 11,000.

I hope you do because it's aggrevating being declined.

  • What type of bank do you use?  I use a small credit union and that is one of the "perks" so to speak of banking with them - they approve loans for people at lower rates who may be higher risk because you're technically part owner.  I was able to get a car loan in college with no job other than workstudy and some savings in the bank.  May be worth a shot.  Otherwise, check with the dealer - sometimes they surprise me with some decent financing offers.

  • My bank is a local federal credit union...it is based out of the city I am in and I think it is only here.

I am of course hoping I may have a teaching job by then (but not holding my breath) I do *technically* still work at the childcare center I was at for 2 years. I work there occasionally each month and all summer. I'm wondering if I could maybe put them as my employer? Hmmm I guess I will have to see when the actual time comes!

ps; now I am looking at a Subaru lol I need something awesome in snow!

  • I have no idea on the financing, but you may also want to look at Mazda 2s or 3s! We have a Mazda 3 hatchback and LOVE it (only wish it was a little bigger now because of the LO, we bought it before we were pg and weren't planning on kids for a bit longer :)). Handles well in the snow and good on gas mileage.

We test drove the Subaru Impreza and the Mazda3 and the Mazda was much more comfortable and handled better. The Subaru was stiff and the seats were uncomfortable (we do a lot of car travel so comfy seats is a must!). The 2s came out shortly after we bought our 3 and if we were going to get a second car that is what I would get!
