Has anyone ever interviewed with someone they know?

I have an interview in a few weeks with someone I know.  I haven't seen them in about 10 years, but we just lost touch.  I am obviously going to not think about that, but I know it could be weird.  The interview is with him and 3 other people I don't know. I am just curious if this has happened to anyone before.

  • The job I have now :) - Just remember, if it's odd feeling for you, it probably is for them too.  Just stay professional and be yourself.

    A few questions:
How do you know you were going to interview with this person?
Did you get the interview because of your pre-existing relationship?

I'm asking because if this person is helping you get the job, and you have a few weeks before the interview with them and others on a panel-like interview, now would be the time to be re-establishing that relationship with the person to give yourself more info.  What are they looking for, how the company might or might not suit you, etc.  I wouldn't sit idly before the interview; I'd be using this to my advantage.

I've interviewed with a colleague but once it was a welcome coincidence that really nailed me getting the job.  It was "Boy, am I glad you're here!" and "Well, I'm really glad you're here!"  My latest job I got from a colleague, who didn't even require me to interview at all.  HTH and GL!

  • Thanks Ladies!

To answer your questions:  When I sent my resume, the ad said sent it to him.  I would like to think I got the interview because I am qualified, I hope that he doesn't feel obligated to interview me.  Knowing him, something says that isn't the case.  Either way, that is a good idea. The funny thing is I have known he has been living in this area for several months, but haven't managed to meet up yet.  I think I would definitely take your advice and try to see if I can talk to him before I go to the interview so everything isn't a total surprise.

  • I interviewed someone that I was good friends with after high school and worked with a little, he was really good friends with my BF.  We had all sorta fallen out of touch.  It was a bit strange and to be honest that was part of the reason he didn't get the position.  You have to address how you are going to be able to take direction and criticism from this person if they are to be your manager or supervisor.  We are a very small company so I would be the person in charge of corrections and training which can be difficult if you know the person.

  • My old boss just contact me the other day and I just formally accepted the offer today.  I interviewed with 2 people I knew (but not really seen in 3 years) and 2 people I didn't know.  My interviews with the 2 I did know consisted of me catching them up on my experience in the past 3 years and them trying to sell me on the position.   (1 gave me some coaching on how to interview with the 2 people I didn't know!)
  • When DH and I were engaged, I applied for an aid position in the district he works for.  Because I didn't live in the area (was moving down here after the wedding), and my maiden name was still on my resume, they didn't realize the connection.  I interviewed with the Director of Special Ed (his boss), the principal at the elementary school (he teaches at the middle school), and the assistant superintendant.  I had never met any of them, but knew of them.  Halfway through the interview, they said there was another opening, this one at the middle school (I had applied for an elementary school aid position) and suddenly DH's principal joined us.  He recognized me right away, and mentioned to the others that I was the fiance of one of his teachers.  Everyone thought it was funny that we had gone through most of the interview with them not knowing, but I didn't want to make a big deal out of it.

I would take PP about reconnecting.  You never know what it might help.
