Wedding Recap (long)

All I can say is that I am glad it's over.

FRIDAY:

- The bride was supposed to meet me at the church at 4:45pm on Friday to go over everything since I had no clue about the order of the ceremony, who was involved, and where she wanted people to stand.  I had never been in that church so I thought it was important. I got off work at 4:30 and rushed over to the church to meet her.  She didn't show up until 5:15.  The rehearsal was scheduled to start at 5:30.

- She rushes to try to tell me the ceremony order, etc....but the wedding party is already showing up and everyone is getting restless.

- There were 16 attendants: fraternity boys and several younger sorority sisters of mine.  The boys were impossible to corral.

-  It took her 30 minutes...yes, 30 minutes, to decide how she wanted the wedding party to line up in the front of the church.   I kept giving her suggestions, but she wanted them a certain way, which was not going to work.  Finally, at 6pm, we had the wedding party lined up in the front of the church (the way I had first suggested) and we were ready to start the rehearsal.

- The MOB and FOB were not there.

- The wedding party kept goofing off and would not pay attention.

- She wanted to run through it twice and finally, by 7:15pm, we were finished and I only felt OK about how the wedding would actually go.

- I then had to drive over to the reception site to make sure I knew where she wanted me to tell the vendors to set up the next day.

SATURDAY:

- I get to the reception site at 2pm to make sure the cake lady put the cake where the bride wanted it.  I then had to somehow pin this ribbon and broach on the cake because the cake lady wouldn't do it.  I figured it out, crisis averted.

- I went home and changed really quickly and then headed to the church where I had to put down the runner and do some other minor things. Nothing too hard.

- Their pictures were a disaster.  Everyone was running late, including one of the groomsmen who missed the pictures altogether.  The older (mid-30's) step-sister of the bride got upset because, during the outside pictures, the bridesmaids picked up the train of the bride's dress while she walked without her so she left the pictures crying.  The weather was crappy.

- Everyone gets to the church at around 4pm.  I have to turn on the battery powered string lights that were framing the isle (and they were a bright white and not a soft yellow - very tacky) and then corral 4 of the groomsmen (who were wasted) to usher people to their seats to avoid people walking down the center isle.

- The MOB?  Yeah, she didn't show up until 5:20 for the 5:30 wedding.  No joke.  As a matter of fact, the MOB didn't say anything to me Friday or Saturday.  She had nothing to do with the wedding and instead of telling her daughter how beautiful she looked when she saw here for the first time at 5:20, she asked her how she looked.

- The wedding got started right on time and was perfect except for the fact that the pianist couldn't see the bride when she got down the isle so he kept playing for what seemed like forever.  I had to walk down to the front of the church (the side) and tell him to stop playing.

- Pictures after the wedding were also a disaster.  She had no list of any kind so the photog was trying to round people (the family) up, half of whom had left already.  Had she contacted me ahead of time, I have a detailed system for this which would have been muuuuuuuuch faster.  But alas, I was just informed Tuesday and did the best I could.  The ceremony was over by 6, but they weren't even finished taking pictures with the fam until 7.  After that, they still had to finish with the wedding party because the bride and groom didn't see each other before.

I'm sure there is much more, but at this time, that's all I have the energy to write!

  • WOW. I was waiting to hear about this all weekend. Seriously you are a saint to put up with all that crap. Did she even thank-you for doing it afterward?

She did actually thank me several times saying I was a "life saver".  I almost said, "yes, I know" but instead said, "no problem, glad I could help".

She's a nice girl, she was just clueless when it came to the wedding.

  • Well at least that is something!

  • Goodness...you have MUCH more patience than I do. One of my pet peeves is being delegated as leader of something that is completely chaotic and unorganized. That happened recently at a school function; I was ready to pull my hair out. I've always thought it would be fun/interesting to be a wedding planner, but after reading this, no thanks! I hope they send you a thank you card or gift. I can't believe she didn't realize that calling a few days prior to the wedding after a six-month lapse period is not acceptable.

  • I can NOT believe you actually did it for her! I hope you treated yourself to something really good.

  • Wow, sounds like a clusterfuck if I ever saw one.

I hate hate hate when brides and grooms don't do pictures organized.  This happened at the last wedidng I was in and it was awful, esp b/c they ran out of food during cocktail hour, so the guests weren't pleased waiting around watching everyone take pics.

I actually LOVE coordinating weddings, but I have method to the madness.  If I can get my hands on them earlier and they're organized, they are very/fun and interesting! This one just happened to be sooooooo last minute, all I could do was tame the beast.
